Betty Recio Obituary

Published by Inside Bay Area News on Oct. 9, 2012.
Betty Ruth ("B.R.") Recio
August 25, 1931-October 1, 2012
Resident of Hayward
Betty Ruth Recio died at 81 of complications of rheumatoid arthritis and pulmonary disease. She was the mother of three daughters, the grandmother of eight and the great-grandmother of five. Mama, Mimi, Gigi, Grandmother, Grams, those are the names she would want to be remembered by.
Mama was born in Missouri; a child of the Depression, she moved with her family to California in 1935.
She graduated from Fremont High School in Oakland, CA and later took classes at Chabot Community College. She wanted her children and grandchildren to love the "classics" and to value Education.
She admired the traditional family but married four times and raised her last child alone before "single mother" was a demographic category.
Mama worked hard to support herself and make sure her third daughter got a college education. She was a believer who began and ended a Presbyterian, but who never stopped seeking a true spiritual home. She smoked for many years and loved a good martini, but was ahead of her time in maintaining her beauty through nutrition and exercise long before aerobics or organic food.
Mama spent her last active years joyfully caring for her grandchildren and her great-grandson.
Mama is survived by her daughters, Heather Warner, Joan Sullivan, and Clair Whitmer, and her sons-in-love, Keisuke Warner and Emmanuel Bridonneau. She was the beloved grandmother of Andrew Warner, Jessica Warner, Wendy Warner Roberts, Jaci Sullivan Ribeiro, Andrew Sullivan, and Sydney Sullivan and beloved great-grandmother of Tyler and Alexis Ribeiro, Ewan Roberts, and Milo and Eli Warner. She was the lovingly remembered aunt of Tom Turner, Pam Turner, Bob Hullinger and Beverley Blair. Mama was preceded to heaven by her parents, Clara and Frank Hullinger, brother Ray Hullinger, sister Mary Turner Wallberg, and granddaughter Jaci Sullivan Ribeiro. Mama was deeply grateful for her friend Isabel Noia.
Her family thanks the staff of the Windsor Post-Acute Care Center in Hayward and all who cared for Mama in her last days, especially Janel Lane, Helen Atkins, Dr. Suri, Elizabeth Zuniga, and Blessing Taiwo.
She was interred with a simple graveside service per her request on October 8.
