Betty Slingerland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 22 to Mar. 23, 2023.
Betty Ruth Slingerland passed away peacefully in her home holding her husband's hand in the early hours of Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at the age of 82. Numerous family and friends had the opportunity to say goodbye to Betty in the weeks before she left us.

Betty, also known as "Tess" or "Tessie" was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. She was born to Norman J. Warr and Emma Rydalch on Sept. 30, 1940, in Tooele County and spent most of her life in Erda, Utah. She descended from a long line of farmers, sheep herders and baseball/softball players. Betty was preceded in death by her beloved siblings, Diane Warr Judd, Thomas Warr and Colleen Warr.

After graduating from Tooele High School, Betty attended Utah State University. After college, she joined Western Airlines as a flight attendant and moved to California. That is where she met her husband, Bob Slingerland, who was also working at Western Airlines. He said it was love at first sight. He asked her if she'd like to grab a cup of coffee on her return flight from Las Vegas and the rest is history. Betty married Bob in 1963.

After having their first child, Betty and Bob decided it was time to move back to the community she loved, Erda, Utah, with her parents Norm and Emma just up the lane. She raised her three children there, Rob (Amanda), Stacey Lundy (Steve) and Toby, the mischievous youngest. She loved her grandchildren Alexis, Nate, Cole, Sam and Will dearly and would typically speak to all her children and grandchildren on an almost daily basis.

Betty's great joys in life other than her family and friends were reading, traveling, gardening, skiing, tennis and of course her absolute favorite, softball (keeping her grandfather's and father's legacy alive). As a coach and pitcher, she led her Interwest and Green Street teams to multiple championships, typically defeating their archrival, First Security.

Betty loved her community of Erda, Utah. Along with her parents and siblings, they built Erda's "Field of Dreams"- the Allen B. Warr Memorial Park. This park was where Erda came together on Tuesday and Thursday summer evenings to take in a softball game and enjoy the famous Erda Burger and brownies. Emma and Diane cooked up the food, Norm and Tom kept the fields pristine, and Betty could always be found in the scorekeeper's booth, managing the scoreboard and keeping the scorer's book. Betty was instrumental in developing and organizing Erda Days - a community event held every July that includes a parade, ball games and an old timer's dinner. She also coordinated numerous community fundraisers.

Bob and Betty started multiple successful businesses based in Salt Lake City including Interwest Business and Green Street Social Club. Betty designed the offices and club, kept the books, managed the office and generally kept things running smoothly behind the scenes.

A celebration of life will be held on April 15, 2023, at the Allen B. Warr Memorial Park in Erda, Utah starting at 4PM.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to a special fund for the Allen B. Warr Memorial Park at https://gofund.me/97331c04.

Please share memories and pictures on her memorial website on Legacy.com.

Betty was a kind and thoughtful soul, but she also had a quick wit and certain wry looks that always kept her husband and children in line. She will be deeply missed.

Mom,
When you started fading away,
I refused to believe it could be true. I thought and prayed you would come back no matter how hard it was for you.
How could I allow myself to even
Imagine saying goodbye or my life without you?
For as long as I can remember, I have felt the love you and dad gave to all of us, the love that held no bounds. This has carried me through the hardest times of my life. You were always there for me, and I can't find the words to express how grateful I am for the endless love and support you provided.
This past year has been the hardest year of my life, Dad finding out he has cancer, Toby fighting for his life, seeing some of the people I love the most almost die, Lexie being so sick, my car accident. Covid and more. Through all these challenges, our family has remained strong, not giving up on each other or life. You and Dad taught us to love, laugh, and enjoy every moment, to respect everyone, and to always wear a smile.
Your impact on our family extends beyond just being a loving mother. Tess, as all your grandchildren called you, became Grandma just didn't seem to fit. You were by my side when I brought each of them into this world, and there love for you is immeasurable. The love and strength you instilled in our family have not gone unnoticed. Alexis, who gave up her job to move back to Utah and help take care of you and Dad, has been nothing short of amazing. Her love and dedication to our family are a evidence to the values you taught us. Lexi and I make an unstoppable team. We decided that we had to find laughter in all we did, no matter how hard the task. . I will forever cherish the memories of us laughing, crying, and overcoming challenges the best we could. I do not know what I would do without her. She is amazing special person and I am so proud to be her mom..
Nate and Cole, too, have stepped up and lent their support whenever we needed it. They are incredible young men; you have touched their hearts in ways no one could. They will forever miss you and the special bond you shared with each of them.
You touched everyone in our family in such a way where we all felt special and loved.
They will always remember the special bond each of them shared with you and the countless memories they made with you.
When Steve and I needed advice, or what would be the best decision on certain matters, we almost always asked for you opinion. We were taking the other day about Erda Days, no matter how much he tried to hide, you always found him. Even if you had to use the microphone to seek him out. He loved and respected you so much.
You taught me how to love unconditionally.
And how to try and be my very best in all I try to do. No matter what... there will never be a more loving mom than you.
You knew just by the sound of my voice if was hurting, or something wasn´t right.
Never once will I ever stop thinking about you. I miss you already, I still can´t imagine my life without you.
You were more than my mom. You were my
Best friend and a great listener, too.
You always made me feel special and loved.
I will miss your laugh, and just seeing and spending time with you.
Oh, how I'm going to miss our special talks, going to lunch, shopping, and just hanging out with you.
And the fun things we used to do.
Mom, I can never say goodbye to you,
Because I could never bear the pain, it hurts so much that you´re not here.
I don´t think I will ever be the same.
Thank you for being my mom and my best friend.
So.
Instead, for now I will say I love you, Mom;
Until we meet, and I see you again.
Love your daughter,
Stacey Lee.

I want to express my deepest condolences to the Slingerland family for their loss. Aunt Betty set the standard for an aunt. She was kind, encouraging and generous to all her nieces and nephews. Aunt Betty always greeted me with a hug and a smile. She was proud of my accomplishments and made a real effort to help me achieve my goals. Aunt Betty (and Uncle Bob) gave the best Christmas presents and frequently overpaid at least one niece or nephew to perform an odd job or to work at Green Street or Interwest Business. Most important to me, Aunt Betty and Grandma Emma were my mom´s best friends and that trio of ladies from Erda, Utah were the best that there have ever been.
