Betty Stiffey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 7, 2025.
Betty J. Stiffey, age 98, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, at her home in Largo, Florida.

Born May 4, 1927, in Salineville, Ohio, Betty was the bright and steady center of her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend whose strength and kindness shaped generations.

Betty remained sharp, engaging, and playfully spirited right up to the very end. Wherever life placed her, she had a way of leaving people better - brightening rooms, lifting hearts, and making others feel seen and appreciated. She connected deeply with those around her, and her presence was truly a gift.

She is survived by her daughters Paula Hall and Karen Johnson, and by her grandchildren: Joshua Hall, Samantha Bruner, and Erickson Winter. Betty will be deeply missed by all who knew her and remembered with joy, admiration, and endless love.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM at her home in Clearwater, Florida. This will be an informal, drop-in gathering. Guests are welcome to stop by at any time during those hours to honor Betty, share memories, and connect with loved ones.

One of my earliest and most vivid memories of "Mugga" comes from when I was 5. She sat me and my brother down on the kitchen floor of her little house. In front of us, she placed a candle and a marble.... and with that simple setup, she explained how the Earth orbits the Sun, and other things like the other planets in our solar system.

It is the first time I remember learning something deep from someone in our family, and it struck me even then how clear and thoughtful her explanation was. I vividly still remember the hardness of the floor, the little candle, and how she moved the marble. Over the years, I came to realize how fitting that moment was! How much she is like the Sun in our family. We revolved around her light and her warmth, her quiet wisdom, her steady center. That orbit stayed constant through the decades, even into her late 90's.

She had a brilliant and curious mind, and a natural gift for explaining things with clarity and care. I aspire to be as thoughtful and rational as she was. Her presence shaped so much of who I am, and I'm grateful I got to be close to her gravity for so long.

Betty was always so gracious and always welcomed me into her home at Portage Lakes . She threw great birthday parties for my friend Paula and her sister Karen . There was the Cookie Cooks Club and ice skating parties , too! Also she was very beautiful and, as a kid ,I thought she looked like a Movie Star!

Betty was so kind and helpful to me when I started at the jail. Her bright smile radiated whenever she came in. She did truly live life to the fullest and spread cheer wherever she went.

The first thing I saw when I met Betty was that huge smile and sparkling eyes. She was one of the most positive and energetic women I've ever known. Age just wasn't a factor for her. I had the pleasure of spending lots of time with her over the past few years and it was always so enjoyable. I considered her one of my best friends, a soul sister. I will forever be grateful for her friendship and for her gift of living life to the fullest. I learned a lot from her and will carry that with me. Even with all she had been going through these last months, she didn't complain and hardly ever lost that smile. She has been a true gift in my life. I love you Betty always!!!

Oh, Betty, where do I start... Visiting you at Howard Lake as a child was always the best part of my summers. I remember the yellow Cadillac convertible you and Lisle allowed me as a 16 year old to drive when you came down to Salineville on Memorial Day. The unending laughter and fun we shared many, many times when Patty and I would visit you in Florida for a cousins´ week. You even extended you friendship and hospitality to my friends, who you called "cuz" as well. I´ll always remember you for the excitement you added to my life and the never-ending joy and smiles. Thank you "cuz."
