So we lost one of the Originals last week, my friend Beverley Tavares.
I met Bev and Patrice Simons when they managed the Environment Ministry´s enormous filing system along with Brian Rowlinson. Brian would be in his office and Bev and Patrice would field all inquiries that passed their desks, hunting down the specific file needed in the long and narrow room where everything that mattered was impeccably classified.
Bev was instantly my friend - well perhaps not instantly - but an efficient, warm and receptive office environment made it easy to return for assistance. If Brian was the conductor, Patrice and Bev were his office engineers, they were important and we all knew it.
Not long after Brian left the Ministry I must have come in for something and sensed that Bev and Patrice needed to commiserate and I sorely needed their insights and experience and so we went and had lunch. That would become our monthly routine on and off for the next 6 to 10 years at La Trattoria restaurant. I was a new father and a new civil servant and their counsel, insight and humour were most valuable to me and so we became friends.
Friends change us, helping us to see perspectives that we might not usually embrace. We discussed our latest challenges, personal and at work, and shared family events, discussed plans and hopes. Bev had strong opinions - they were plain to see and be heard.
It is easy to see what made Bev an original - purple - yet the colour was not just skin deep. It defined her as a person -not the colour but the decision to be an original. Bev held her own thoughts and ways of seeing the world and it moved her through this place and others as a unique individual free to hold her own counsel, free to make friends with who she wanted and walk between worlds, social, political and personal. Bev was unconventional. What Bev had seen, where she had been would surprise anyone who didn't know her, but it was also the way she saw it - not as a passenger but as a driver of her life - not so much bucking convention as just being herself. No one who knew her was surprised to see her at midnight premieres of the Twilight Vampire film series or hear that she dreamt, actually planned at one point, to move to the Seychelles.
With her drive to be herself Bev freed us all to be more ourselves just by association. Her outward expression of her uniqueness allowed anyone who knew her to lean in just a little bit to their own individuality even if only internally. She would often say - why worry about how others do it or how it was done before- be yourself -do what you think is right.
So it was a shock to hear about Bev´s sudden passing. But Beverly goes out as herself leaving her community, friends and family as the truly independent person she was - a burden to no one.
When Nicole Famous called me last week to give me the news I was walking down the street in Hamilton. I pulled into the parking lot next to Makin´ Waves to sit on the curb of a parking bay to take it all in. As I looked down there at my feet on the black grey tarmac was a splash of purple, bougainvillea leaves blown into the corner by the wind.
So now when I see the color purple I will invariably think of a challenging but ultimately uplifting book, a royal color, and Bev, and I will lean in a little more to being myself. I am grateful.

Deepest condolences, Family, on the loss of your dear loved one.

As a teacher, I remember Mrs. Tavares, back when MOED offices were on Point Finger Road. Lately, during her frank conversations in the school office, I grew to admire the fair and thorough professional that she was.
Always smiling, she had the uncanny ability to communicate urgency, while still pausing long enough for due research and quick completion of the challenge at hand. Mrs. Tavares gave keen and kind attention to students, particularly those who were habitually late or absent.

I remember walking into the office, near the end of that last day we spoke, to find our Amin. Assistant seated in darkness, her purple-ized office surroundings immaculate. When asked if she was OK, "Ms. Purple" quickly took the attention away from herself. She offered one of her purple pens, though I wasn't writing anything; and, she was seen (among others) greeting students as they left school, that day.

"See you, when you get back," she'd answered, in response to whether she was returning.
"See you in the morning, Mrs. Tavares! It will be difficult for us to return to work, without you."

May her family and friends, including our school family, be encouraged.

Mrs Purple all I can say is this cannot be real! You were our acting admin at WPS until June 2023. You were so helpful, got things done and knew your admin skills! The last thing that you said to me on the Friday the last day of school before our Easter break was here! You handed me an envelope that you were going to go over with me when we returned back to school! The phone call that I received left me numb when I heard of your passing! How am I going to return to work on Monday, April 3rd and know that you won't be there sitting behind the desk in the office with your purple attire and purple keyboard and mouse! The short time that you worked with me you had left an impact on all of us at WPS! Condolences to your daughters, husband and other family members! RIP Purple!
