Bill Hamon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 11, 2016.
Bill Hamon, 92, passed away on November 8, 2016, in Tyler. He was born July 4, 1924, in Grayson County, near Van Alstyne. He was predeceased by his parents, Lorlie Mae (Edwards) and William Edgar Hamon and a brother, Claude F. Hamon.

He was most proud of his WWII service in the U.S. Marine Corps (1943-1946) where he served as sergeant on several central and south Pacific Islands, under frequent Japanese aerial attack.

On June 7, 1947, he married the former V. Elaine Raiborn, who survives him. She remained the love of his life through 69 years of marriage. He is also survived by daughters, Susan Scoggins and husband Steve of Lindale, and Diane Blasingame and husband John of Houston; granddaughters, Anna Walker of Lindale, Amanda Perez of Wimberley, and Lindsey Blasingame of Houston; five great-grandchildren; nephews and numerous cousins.

His quick wit and sense of humor helped him gain many longtime friends, either while employed as an oilfield supply representative in W. Texas or as a United States Postal worker in Tyler. He retired from the postal service in 1989. His friends and acquaintances could count on a good-natured trouncing if they dared play dominoes with him. When not at work, he could most likely be found on a lake somewhere, preferably cruising down Big Cypress Bayou toward Caddo Lake, rod and reel at the ready.

He was baptized in his youth at First Baptist Church in Van Alstyne and was a member of First Baptist Church, Tyler. At age 90, he received his 75-year member pin from Woodmen of the World Fraternal Organization.

Services are under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler. Graveside services will be held at Van Alstyne Cemetery at 2 p.m. on November 12, 2016.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 96262, Washington, D.C. 20090-6262 or The Salvation Army, 633 N. Broadway Ave., Tyler, 75702.
