To the MacArthur family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the news of Bill's untimely passing, which I regret I only heard about earlier today. Such very sad news.
Bill and I met at the University of Ottawa and became good friends once we realized that we both liked to sit at the back of the classroom and joke about some of the goings on or just life in general. We had a fun 4 years there, during the last of which I shared an apartment with the "Swamp" and the "Slotz" and also had the pleasure to get to know Ian, Karen, Guy and some of the rest of the crew from Vanier. In later years I had the opportunity to meet his partner Cathy during a family trip to Mt. Tremblant.
Bill was a great guy with very strong attachments to his family and friends. I feel fortunate to have known him as a friend and lucky to have seen him again for an evening out in Montreal just this past June (picture attached). That evening, Bill spoke of proudly of Tarn and Hope and of his plans to retire in bliss with Cathy to a place on Howe Island.
His time here was too short, but very full and he'll be missed by all.

Ian, Karen, Cathy, Tarn, Hope and the rest of the family and Bill's many friends in Montreal. It was my pleasure to be at Woodroffe High School during both Ian`s and Bill`s tour de-force. To protect the guilty I will offer no details, just saying things were never dull. Then Kingston, again no details and the Hacienda on Elgin street back in Ottawa. That was, Ottawa University, K&L Touch football and parties all hosted by Bill, Dave & Dave, plus guest appearances by Mic & Jeffery and many other old boys & old girls.
The Woodroffe 25th reunion, the Old Boys Football game that we all played in. The pre-game warm up at Tony`s the night before again no details. Then the 50th reunion and the joy of seeing old friends once again.
Bill was a wonderful friend full of fun and wit. After reading the remarks by those who knew & loved him in Montreal It seems he only got better.
God Bless you all
Tom

My sincere and deepest condolences to all of Bill's loved ones. I got to know him at McGill Basketball annual reunions. He was, clearly, very devoted to his teams and his players. More importantly, he was also a genuinely nice person.

Hi Mary and Rick,
First off, I want to say that I am so sorry for the loss of your friend/family member, "Wild Man" Bill. I know that he spend a lot of good times with you on the Island and you will surely miss him. Of course, I feel especially sad for Cathy as this must have turned her world upside down and it must have been a huge shock for her. Please let us know if we can do anything to help you such as if you need to go away for a funeral and need help with farm chores. Emily Dowling

My deepest sympathies on your loss. Bill was a good man with a sharp wit and always had a twinkle in his eye. I traded many conversations and emails with him, especially during his years as an assistant basketball coach at McGill. May he rest in peace. May the family be spared further sorrow.

To the extended MacArthur Clan,
On behalf of Heather, Kyle, and Ben I want to express our sadness on hearing the news that Bill had passed on suddenly. All of us felt very connected to Bill, even though weeks and months would pass between seeing or speaking with him.
Over the years he has been a very good friend to everyone in our family, always caring and concerned, always ready to share. We will miss him and he will never be forgotten.
We are so sorry for your loss.

Hi Cathy, Hope and Tarn,
I'm thinking of you at this very difficult time. Bill was the love of your lives, your biggest, best fan. I can't even begin to imagine the hole his death has left in your lives and your hearts. He lived life to the fullest and has left you with tons of wonderful warm loving memories and inspirational stories. I'm hoping that all the virtual and real hugs and best wishes we can send your way will carry you through the rough moments, days ahead. Remember we are all here for you!
I am grateful to have known Bill as a supportive, warm and enthusiastic friend. He had an infectious positive energy that kick started and sustained the completion of many projects around here. When I walk around the farm, yard, cottage the house there are memories of Bill, Hope and Tarn's visits and contributions. Memories of many nights of great food, laughter and sharing stories around the kitchen table at Dave & Debbie's will always be close to my heart. We will all miss Bill here on Howe Island. He was excited about the possibility of moving here someday and living in the chalet on the water.
You are loved as was Bill! You will always be welcome to come to visit/live here on Howe Island.

I went to high school with Bill (Swamp) and we were on the same touch football team in our 20's. I hadn't seen him in a while but ran into him at the Woodroffe High School 50 year reunion and got caught up. Simply a great guy and someone I feel fortunate to have known. A great loss.
Bill took thousands of wonderful photos

Bill was a true friend and even a greater neighbor. We first met Bill when he was mowing our lawn ! A different way to welcome new neighbors from a unique person. We spent numerous memorable
hours with Bill and his family and friends. Only his big heart surpasses his uniqueness and we miss him already !
Our sympathies go out to Cathy, Tarn, Hope and family.

Bill had a back of steel and a heart of gold. He was also fearless... with one possible exception:
After back-to-back encounters with bumblebees at our farm last summer, Bill (prefaced by numerous expletives) reluctantly confessed, "Christ, I've got a whole new respect for bumblebees."
We've lost a generous, hard-working, caring and very fun-loving guy. None of us will ever forget his hugs or the mischievous twinkle in his eyes.

My contacts with Bill were off and on, but over many years, through the Town of Mount Royal Rugby Football Club or, in Morin-Heights, on the Viking Ski Club trails. But he was always good news to run into, cheerful, friendly and with a positive outlook. Heartfelt condolences for this sudden and sorrowful loss to all the family from myself and Linda.
