Bill Moyers, an acclaimed journalist and award-winning host of several PBS programs, died June 26, 2025, of complications from prostate cancer, in New York City.
Moyers was best known to viewers for his thoughtful and in-depth coverage of American culture, politics, and public affairs. He first gained national prominence as White House Press Secretary under President Lyndon B. Johnson before transitioning into journalism, where he became a respected voice in public broadcasting. Moyers is especially recognized for his work on PBS, including influential programs like "Bill Moyers Journal," "NOW with Bill Moyers," and "Moyers on America," which blended investigative journalism with thoughtful commentary on democracy, religion, and social justice. He was also a regular on "CBS Evening News," produced programs for "Frontline," and more.
Throughout his career, Moyers has received a slew of awards and recognitions for his work, including over 30 Emmy Awards and nine Peabody Awards. He was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1995 and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1988. He is known to audiences for his calm demeanor and intellectual rigor.
Danielle Brian, Executive director at Project on Government Oversight, called him "a remarkable man, whose calm yet fierce voice demanded more from our country on behalf of the politically powerless. He was my mentor and in these dark times his focus on eradicating corruption and abuse of power will continue to be my inspiration."
Jim Steele, Moyers's coauthor on the book "America: What Went Wrong?" said Moyer's voice was needed in today's politics. "Moyers was outraged by the role money played in politics," he wrote on Facebook, "and was a constant, articulate critic of those who would subvert Democracy for personal gain. His voice and his moral compass will be missed."

Goodbye Bill Moyers. Rest in Peace. I have admired you all my life and will miss knowing your physical body is no longer with us, but your spirit will live on in all of us who profited from your wisdom and felt comfort in knowing there was at least one good patriotic American amongst us. I am 86 so was with you for a long part of your journey.

Bill Moyers was a rare journalist-unafraid to engage with the most challenging and provocative thinkers of our time, including Noam Chomsky. He generously allowed me and Peter Wintonick to include excerpts from his interview with Chomsky in our feature documentary, "Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media". The image we used for our VHS video cover was taken from that interview. I remain forever grateful for Bill's intellect, integrity, and generosity. He set a standard for public discourse that is sorely needed today.

Bill Moyers is simply the best there is. His talk with the wonderful, Joseph Campbell in, "The Power of Myth" is one of the most thoughtful, intelligent moments in the history of TV. Thank you, Bill for enlightening all of us.

Thank you for being you Bill Moyers. You introduced me to Joseph Campbell in The Power of Myth. I was 22 then. I'm 60 now and have returned to teaching, this time, high school English resource. Guess what? At this particular High School, they teach the Hero's Journey in all Sophomore English classes. Thank you for the life you lived and the influence your story telling and interviews had on us. Go with Christ to Paradise! from, a fan.

Bill was a noble and sagacious force for good. I teach Sociology at the University of Utah and I was grateful for all his material that I presented to my students. I was known to often say, hey if you can't go to college, just watch everything Bill Moyers does, and you'll better educated than most. Dr. Frank J. Page

His calm demeanor was on display during his Sunday visit to the Three Pigs BBQ in McLean, Virginia when he was Press Secretary. One of his children had spilled milk. We were very busy and I had not noticed. Mr Moyer retrieved the big yellow mop bucker and proceded to mop the floor at the Three Pigs. Thanks for the great memories. My deepest sympathies to family and friends. Glenn M Chamberlain, Naples, Florida

Our heartfelt condolences to Bill's family for such a great loss. May the memory of the love you shared bring you comfort during these difficult times. We will always remember Bill for the touching tribute he paid in 1982 to the memory of our dear friend Joe Payton, who was one of the youngest CRS directors and stationed in Djibouti (Africa). He died on the operating table during emergency surgery for a
appendicitis. Rest in Paradise, Bill.

In life we become witness to a handful of individuals who stand above all the rest. Their spirit, their humanity, their intellect, their grace, their morality and their selfless generosity challenge us to rise up, to embrace their leadership, follow their example, and attempt to make the world a better place. Bill Moyers was such an individual. His journalism, especially his remarkable work embraced by PBS have influenced millions. His passing has left us deeply saddened. My sympathies to his family, his friends and all who mourn his loss. We celebrate his life, forever grateful. The many gifts he bestowed to us remain a national treasure.
