Billy P. Poteet, Sr.
Panama City, FL- Billy P. Poteet, Sr. passed away on Wednesday February 20, 2013 at Covenant Hospice after a brief fight with cancer. Born in Montezuma, Georgia on September 29, 1941 to P.G. and Cleone Poteet, Billy left lasting legacies on communities in Georgia and Florida. Billy spent his last 21 years in Panama City Beach where he worked as a firefighter at the Naval Coastal Systems Station before retiring in 2002. Previously, he worked with the Fire Department at Fort Benning, Georgia. In all, Billy worked 22 years with fire departments dedicated to protecting the lives and properties of our service men and women. While living in Panama City Beach, Billy became a charter member and deacon of Cornerstone Baptist Church. He served the church tirelessly in many other leadership positions, helping shepherd the fledgling church from a small group meeting in temporary locations to a congregation of more than 100 meeting in their own facility. Before moving to Panama City Beach, Billy lived 26 years in Richland, Georgia where he was a business owner and served the community for many years as a member and eventually Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department. He was also instrumental in establishing the county's first EMS service.
Billy is survived by his wife of 46 years Patricia (Tricia) and two children; Bill Poteet of Panama City Beach and Patti Rogers of Claxton, Georgia, her husband Jeff and Billy's two grandsons Jesse and Jonah Rogers. Also surviving is his mother-in-law, Helen Jones, several cousins, and many friends in both Georgia and Florida.
A funeral service will begin at 4:00 PM Central Time Friday, February 22, 2013, at the Cornerstone Baptist Church of Panama City Beach with Rev. Buford Senn and Rev. Jerry Moore officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 3:00 PM until service time at 4:00 PM. Burial will be Saturday, February 23, at 3 PM Eastern Standard Time at the Cedar Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in Montezuma, GA with Masonic Rites. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Billy's name may be made to the Cornerstone Baptist Church or Cedar Valley Baptist Church.

Billy, I have been thinking a lot about you. I recall your enthusiasm for the current Cornerstone Church. How you showed me around and what the plans were for a number of projects. Oh I am so sorry I just heard had no idea, Billy was such a special person to us. So welcoming always with a warm hug an so helpful. I know he is at peace and so much better off than us.
