Blanche Campbell Obituary

Blanche Ann Campbell, a lifelong Madera resident and well-known member of the local agricultural community, passed away on June 25th at her home on the family ranch near Berenda. She was 74. Blanche attended kindergarten in Dixieland, school at St. Joachim's, high school at Madera High, and college at Fresno State, where she specialized in Animal Husbandry. Animals played a huge role in her life. From the calf she received at age seven until her death, she was always involved with animals. She loved them and loved to work with them. She was born in Madera and never left, living always on the ranch where she helped her parents and later took over to run it by herself for several decades. She was devoted to her parents, and a source of love, attention, care and companionship for mother in her declining years as her world shrank around her. Her daughter was always there for her. Her life's work was 4-H. She went through the program as a child in Fairmead and then led the Dixieland 4-H Club for more than half a century, teaching, guiding, advising and helping hundreds if not thousands of youngsters to develop themselves and their abilities to work with animals. It's fair to say that she lived for 4-H. She held responsible positions at both the Chowchilla and Madera Fairs, taught a course in meat cutting at Fresno State, and worked at both Valley Feed & Fuel and the sale-yard in Madera. She believed strongly in community service and was a fixture in the kitchen whenever the Cowbelles had a feed. Now she joins her father, Frank T. Campbell, mother Jennie M. Campbell, and brother Jon Casey Campbell in the afterlife, leaving behind hundreds of friends and her brother, Tom Campbell, along with his family in Brno, Czech Republic. May her soul rest in peace. Her work is done. Private Catholic services will be held at Jay Chapel followed by interment in the Calvary Cemetery. A public celebration of Blanche's life will be held at a future date at the Madera Fairgrounds. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the 4-H Club of your choice, "Blanche would approve." Jay Chapel, 1121 Roberts Avenue, Madera, California (559)674-8814

My name is Jerry O Payne, Baton Rouge, LA. I am the youngest of 17 children.... If there is a word to describe Blanche, it would be she is one of my Heroes. Why? Growning up in Dixieland attending school. 4-H was a foundation builder for most youth in our community...
Blanche and her Aunt Ms. Vickie Campbell were our leaders... Being in 4-H starting at age 9 years old. My projects were electricity gardening, homemaking and livestock. Their passion, love, and commitment build character in each 4-H... Blanche & Ms. Vickie, picked up and dropped off many
4-Hers. Blanche taught me livestock judging, showmanship, jr. leadership' and knowledge to keep an accurate 4-H book.
In addition, She taught me the 4-H pledge...I pledge my head for clear thinking, my heart for greater loyalty, my hands for greater service..., to my club, my community, my state, my nation, and the world!
Exhibiting Suffock market lambs at Los Banos, Chowchilla, & Madera provided a valuable source of income. Becoming a Grand Champion showing market lamb brought great pride being a member of Dixieland 4-H Club in 1960's. Another great memory was traveling with Blanche to livestock judging contest... An exampke traveling starting at 3a.m. to Redding, CA
judging beef cattle and to San Felipe Ranch in Morgan Hill, CA, being selected top livestock judge, Junior Hereford Association
brought great pride. Blanch taught me to have a keen eye for judging and understand giving reasons...
Graduating from Madera High School, Class of 1971. Blanche wrote me an outstanding letter of recommendation to Chico State College....
Enclosing, make the best better was our goal in 4-H. Thru my leadership experience in Dixieland 4-H Club it propelled me building self-confidence, pride, and belief that I could compete in judging, showing
livestock, showmanship, gardening projects, and public speaking... The confidence, love, leadership and pride helped propel me thru Chico State/San Jose State, a graduate fellowship
to Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ..

I recently retired after 45 years in education.. My roots lead back to Blanche Campbell. Again, she was one of my HEROES....
