Mr. Garland was a tremendous teacher, good sense of humour and truly knowledgeable in his field. He was known affectionately as "Bobbie G" by many of his students. May God grant him eternal rest.

Bob and I often encountered students-even while on holidays to DR or Mexico. The routine was the same! Bob asked the student the year in which year she/he graduated and then an exact name would come to mind. Bob consistently inquired as to how the student was doing TODAY. He truly cared! Bob was extremely proud of his students.

I always knew that Bob was remarkably special and it is heart-warming to see that other people here knew that as well! The memory tributes have given us comfort...

Thank you from Ang and the entire Garland family.

Very, very sad about this. Mr. Garland was definitely one of my most memorable high school teachers. The people up in the sky are gonna have some amazing math skills now. You will be missed BG!

Sorry to hear of his passing. Bob and I went to Feehan together. He was a good guy and a good team mate. It sounds like he did pretty good off the field too. Good on you Bob.

I was very lucky to know "Bobby G" (as we loved to call him when I was a student) as both a teacher and later as a colleague as I entered the teaching profession as a math teacher both at Holy Cross. As a teacher he had an unending amount of patience answering our questions and half-heartedly scolding us with a smile when he knew we skipped his 5th period class on a sunny June afternoon in grade 12. As I began my teaching career I would often be rushing around the Holy Cross math office trying to finish up last minute lesson plans and photcopying and typically Bob was sitting on the couch smiling or joking around with someone which would often have a calming effect on me as I started my day. I feel very blessed to have known Bob. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I graduated from Holy Cross in 2000 and took a few great classes from Bob, who was extremely supportive of my mathematical ambitions. He encouraged me to work on my side projects during class and helped me to participate in the math contests that no other students wanted to do.

I went far in math and taught math to many college freshmen during my PhD; I wish I had shared this experience with Bob.

I have such fond memories of Mr. Garland. He was one of the most patient teachers I ever had at Holy Cross. He helped make learning math that much easier and had a smile that could light up a room. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Wonderful man..with high...but realistic expectations for his students.

I still remember him taking me in the hall to ask why my exam results had been so disappointing. No judgement or assumption, just a sincere question and genuine concern.

I've enjoyed a successful 16 year career in finance due largely to the dedication of Mr. Garland.

A heartfelt thank you to him, and his family for supporting him in his passion to be an outstanding teacher.

Having recently lost my father at the young age of 62, I can imagine your pain at this difficult time.

God Bless!

Fine colleague, great math teacher, and not a bad ping-pong player. It was my privilege working with Bob. Taken away from us far too soon, but the memories will last. Sincere condolences to Bob's entire family.

Mr. Garland was a phenomenal teacher to have! I won't ever forget the picture he would show his students of his younger self with a cowboy hat and a thick, blonde moustache. He would always say, "Who do you think this handsome guy is??" and then gleam with pride when he would finally tell us it was him. He will be deeply missed and remembered by his students for his practical jokes (like his remote control whoopee cushion) and teaching us to pay attention to detail.
Thank you Mr. Garland for your inspiration and motivation to pursue engineering and to have given me a love and appreciation of calculus!

Bob's smile and wit will be truly missed - often a practical joker whom liked to have the last laugh. Such a genuine person with a big heart,...one more shining star in the night sky. Very glad our paths crossed and was able to meet him and share some laughs. With deepest sympathy to all. May Bob rest in peace.

Sincerely,

I was a student of Mr. Garland's in 1996. He made me love math and calculus. He was acutally one of the reasons I chose Finance as a career, and now I run a very successful practice because he inspired a love of math. He will be truly missed.

I still remember Algebra 9 with great memories. Easy going, clear & straight forward. It was a great year. Must have been in his first few years of teaching. A much belated thanks....I still use math everyday. Great laughs with his dead-pan sense of humour. Too great. Although it was only one year, 33 years ago, he mattered to me at a formative time. Deepest condolences.

He was the best math teacher not only because he knew his stuff and taught it so well, it was also that he had a great sense of humour he tried to hide sometimes, which made us like him and going to math class even more. He helped us achieve success in a tough subject.. he made calculus seem easy. I think we all felt that he cared about us and how we did. I remember laughing at some of the pranks the kids(looking at you guys: Pat, James, Devon, Nick, Theresa, Davin, Richard) tried to pull in his class, debating with him about the last 1% on a test and him kindly trying to teach me to stop sweating the small stuff, last day of math class in Gr. 12 on the lawn at Cross and a garbage can of water.. My graduating class had 11 or 12 kids that entered the college of engineering and I think he was proud of us.
