Mayor Bob O'Connor

Mayor Bob O'Connor

Bob O'Connor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 1, 2006.
Pittsburgh Mayor Bob O'Connor died last night at 8:55, ending his fight with a brain cancer diagnosed when he was just six months into the job he had sought for a decade.

One hundred minutes later, City Council President Luke Ravenstahl was sworn in as the 59th mayor of Pittsburgh.

Mr. O'Connor, 61, died at UPMC Shadyside less than two months after being diagnosed with primary central nervous system T-cell lymphoma, a rare variant of an unusual cancer of the brain and spinal cord.

Present with the mayor at the time of his death were his wife, Judy, his sons, the Rev. Terrence O'Connor and Corey O'Connor, daughter Heidy Garth, in-laws Jacob and Dee-dee Telled, longtime friends Robert Jablonowski and Jimmy Carr, chief of staff Dennis J. Regan, secretary Marlene Cassidy, spokesman Dick Skrinjar and Kevin Quigley, manager of the city's "Redd Up" campaign.

"I'm devastated. He was my best friend," Mr. Jablonowski said. "It's a tremendous loss. People loved him. When I would walk the streets in Squirrel Hill, you couldn't walk 10 feet without someone coming up to him."

"Our region lost a great man and a visionary leader, and I lost a dear friend and confidant," said Dan Onorato, Allegheny County chief executive. "Bob O'Connor and I began our political careers on the same day, when we were sworn in as members of Pittsburgh City Council. From that day on, our friendship grew and strengthened, and we became partners in governing. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Judy, his children, Heidy, Father Terry and Corey, and the entire O'Connor family during this difficult time."

A public viewing of the mayor in the City-County building's great hall is expected within the next few days. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced today.

The process of succession began when Deputy Mayor Yarone Zober somberly crossed the hall from the mayor's office to council's office. He carried a blue folder containing a letter from acting city solicitor George Specter, advising that the post of mayor was vacant and asking if the council president would accept it.

Mr. Ravenstahl, at that point still the president, opened council's door and, his face a portrait of trepidation, wordlessly accepted the folder. He then retreated to council's hallway for several minutes.

Meanwhile, city officials gathered in the mayor's conference room. Council members William Peduto, Jim Motznik, Twanda Carlisle and Len Bodack assembled to the left of the conference room desk. Mr. Ravenstahl's current and former staff members gathered on the right. Administration members, including Mr. Skrinjar, Chief of Police Dominic J. Costa and Public Works Director Guy Costa, joined the gathering.

Mr. Ravenstahl, with his wife, Erin Lynn, entered from a door that connects with the council chamber. Then he placed his hand on a Bible, and Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Robert C. Gallo administered the oath of office.

"I, Luke Ravenstahl, do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and of this state, and the charter of the city, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of office to the best of my ability," he repeated after Judge Gallo.

Mr. Ravenstahl gave a short speech, calling the day one "of great sorrow and grief for the entire city of Pittsburgh." He ordered flags flown at half-staff and urged residents to pray for and support the O'Connor family.

He said nothing about his plans, other than to indicate that he will follow in Mr. O'Connor's footsteps.

"His words and actions and deeds will serve as a model to my tenure as mayor of the city of Pittsburgh," he said. "The time will come for Pittsburgh to continue on with its mission. Now is the time for us to look back and reflect on what Mayor Bob O'Connor has meant for the city of Pittsburgh. He will be dearly missed."

He took no questions but returned to the Council Chamber, an aide closing the door behind him.

"Tonight, we get a new mayor, and the city has to rally around Luke Ravenstahl like it rallied around Bob O'Connor," said Mr. Peduto. Hours earlier, it had been a day of uncertainty and prayer following an announcement Thursday night by Mr. Skrinjar, who told reporters that Mr. O'Connor's condition had deteriorated. "The mayor has gone from day-to-day to hour-by-hour," Mr. Skrinjar said.

City Council opened its first session since its summer break yesterday with a moment of silence for the mayor, then many officials headed to a Mass and 12:30 p.m. interfaith prayer service for Mr. O'Connor at St. Mary of Mercy Church, Downtown.

Mr. Ravenstahl, Mr. Motznik, Mr. Zober, Allegheny County Sheriff Pete DeFazio, state Sen. Jay Costa Jr., acting city Controller Tony Pokora and other city and county officials were among the 150 who filled the church.

Pastor Donald Green, of Christian Associates of Southwestern Pennsylvania, called Mr. O'Connor "a witness who has cheered on family and friends and indeed a whole city" and saw his destiny as a place "where there is no more pain or sorrow."

And in reference to Mr. Ravenstahl, Mr. Green said, "For your sake we will cheer him on."

Rabbi James Gibson of Temple Sinai said, "We know that sometimes we can leave this world whole and healed, even if we are not cured."

And Bishop Paul Bradley, administrator of the Catholic diocese, read the Beatitudes, which famously begin in the Matthew version, "Blessed are the poor in spirit."

Bishop Bradley praised Mr. O'Connor as "a good man, an honest man, a man of faith, a man who has used the Beatitudes as the standard to guide his own life."

Uncertainty permeated City Council's session yesterday morning. The first meeting after the summer is usually little more than ceremonial, but yesterday's session was heavy with significance. Mr. Ravenstahl opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for the mayor.

Throughout the afternoon, friends and admirers of the Mr. O'Connor visited his office to comfort his staff.

"Bob and his family have been in our constant prayers," said the Rev. John Dinello, pastor of Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Parish. "He's been a great asset to us in Bloomfield. He's been moving on many of the projects we've wanted to have done for several years," Father Dinello said.

"He's part of our family," added Bloomfield advocate and developer Janet Cercone-Scullion. She said Mr. O'Connor had agreed in January to serve as grand marshal of the neighborhood's upcoming Halloween parade.

"We are heartbroken," she said, breaking into tears.

Mayor Bob...

From a "neighbor" in the Cleveland-area, and from one public official to another, thank you for all that you have done for your city over the years, and for being an inspiration to young public officials like me.

Have a great St. Patrick's Day in heaven. I am sure it will be a great party.

Here's an Irish blessing for you...

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

All the best and blessings upon you and your family.

Respectfully,

My deepest sympathies go to the O'Connor family. Mr.O'Connor was a great man who had a smile that lit up any room. He took great pride in his work and enjoyed what he did. It was an honor to know him and also be given the opportunity to work side by side with him. And to be Mayor, you could tell it was in his blood to do so. He will be missed so much by this great city of ours.

Dear Mrs. O'Connor and all of the O'Connor family,

Our family sends their deepest sympathy to all of you. The loss of Mr. O'Connor has hit all of us very hard. My daughter and I met Mr. O'Connor at a Church fair here in Wilkinsburg. a friend of mine belongs to the Church and she asked us to come to the fair. We introduced ourselves to him and he shook our hands and with that great smile of his, made us feel we had just met the most wonderful man ever to grace this earth. It was fun watching him play the games along with his grandchildren. He truly was the best person to be Pittsburgh's Mayor. I think every Mayor should take a page from Mr. O'Connors book and do as he was trying to do, clean up the neighborhoods.I think if every borough, town, and county would do as he tried to do, it would be a better place to live.

He truly was a great man and will be missed dearly.

Thank you for shaking my teenage son's hand and saying "be careful" instead of yelling at him when he was skateboarding. As residents of Wexford, we didn't have the opportunity to vote in the mayoral election, but we both knew in our hearts that Mr. O'Connor was the man for the job. Even through the television screen, we could see the honesty and passion in his eyes. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you all. Grief is often experienced privately, but you all were gracious in allowing the residents of the region to share in that grief and the celebration of his Resurrection Mass; thank you.

Please accept our deepest sympathy for the loss of such a good Husband, Father, Man & Mayor. We know and understand the loss that you are feeling because we lost a good man, father and husband, too this past Valentine's Day. We met Bob personally at my dad's viewing. We were surprised to see him but yet he made us feel so very special by coming to the funeral home to honor our loved one. My brother is a Pittsburgh Police Officer & Bob was respecting his position too which our family thought made Bob so very special. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Take care of yourselves and each other.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Bob O'Connor. I never had the pleasure to meet Bob, but my son Allen did right before he was elected mayor he stoped in Starbucks. Allen and his class were there on a outing from the Childrens Instutite. Teachers took a picture of Bob and Allen. It was sent home for Allen to keep. What a wonderful man to take time out of his busy day to spend time with the children of the day school. You memory will live on in Pittsburgh forever. God Bless to all the people he touched.

To the O'Connor Family,

My deepest sympathy to all of you. Your tremendous loss has hit all of us very deeply. Mayor O'Connor was truly a genuine man who deeply cared for his City. There wasn't a bit of politician in him. I used to watch him on TV when he was President of Council and would think "THIS MAN KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT. HE SHOULD BE MAYOR." I briefly met him at a rally for Governor Rendell at Heinz Field years ago. I shook his hand and told him that I wished that I could vote for him. Being a resident of White Oak, PA, I was unable to do so. But, I was totally taken with his enthusiam, common sense and no-nonsense attitude. I was very happy when he was finally elected Mayor of Pittsburgh and feel that we shall never see another like him. A man who can leave such a lasting impression in such a short time is truly one in a million.

God Bless You All & Thank You for sharing Bob with us!

To the Family of Bob O'Connor,

I never shared in the privilege of knowing your husband/father but I wanted to say I understand your sorrow. Mayor O'Connor was a man of the people of the city of Pittsburgh and was sadly taken at such an exciting and early time in his life.

My dad passed away in 1985 and many people thought it so unfair as he was only 68 years of age. Many were angered but I was not. My father was also a man of the people and loved Pittsburgh and the Pirates team for which he was the announcer of 27 years. As you know, my father was fired back in the 70's and there was anguish about all of that but, I have always said to myself, that dad got to have a 2nd chance at his dream when he was rehired in the 80's. Even though he passed away shortly thereafter, not many people have a 2nd chance to live their dream but dad did and so did Mayor O'Connor.

My heartful prayers for his eternal rest and may his love for all of you provide you with many years of comfort.

Judy, Terry, Heidi, Corey and all family members:

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I did have the privilege of meeting this great man of yours during his mayoral campaign and while supporting events for my brother-in-law, Representative Don Walko. Foremost and most obvious is his love of his family. I am sad for your loss of your husband, dad, grandpap, uncle, brother, confidant. His obvious work ethic, love of family, commitment to the cause and gusto for life so much reminded me of my dad, who we lost to lung cancer in 2000. I can only tell you that time helps you get through each day a little easier than the one before and you will get through the overwhelming loss, but you never get over it. Know that I believe that the number of individuals he touched on earth will pale in comparison to the souls he will touch when he reaches his final home above.

The skies are a brighter place now.

Dear O'Connor Family;

I know my father would post his memories if he could, so in his honor, I'd like to express my condolences.

My father, Earl Beebe, known to most as Bucky, was a dear friend of Bob's father "Paddy" O'Connor. My father watched and cheered enthusiastically when Bob ran for office and was elected. And I know he now grieves with as much of his heart as he once cheered. I was too young to remember much about the days my father would take me to the garage, so I have no memories of my own about Bob, but my father's mind is still sharp and he loves telling me stories, and keeping me informed.

From my family to yours, many prayers, and much sympathy for your loss.

Dear O'Connor Family, From the first day I heard of Bob's illness I watched and prayed for him and you as a family. Every day we get up, take a shower, drink our coffee and off to work we go. We never know when God will be ready for us to come home. Each day such a precious gift taken often times for granted. This has put me in touch even more so with our mortaility and how fragile life is. Bob was a great man, father, friend, leader and so much more. God bless you Mrs. O'Connor and your family. Cory is a spit fire and a wonderful young man. It just warmed my heart to see him at the golf course on TV talking so proudly of his Dad. We may just have the next Mayor O'Connor with Cory. My heart is also with Terry and Hedi as well as your grandchildren and all those near to you. While I do not know you I feel like I do and wish you peace, safety, love and fond memories.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Mayor O'Connor:

YOU ARE THE WIND BENEATH OUR WINGS....MAY YOU REST IN PEACE...

a very sad Pittsburgher

September 9, 2006

Dear O'Connor/Garth Family:

My family and I would like to extend our deepest condolences to you. In Bob's short time as mayor, he gave us all hope in this city that was sorely needed. It's heartbreaking that he didn't get to accomplish all of his goals, but rest assured that he has inspired so many people here to follow in his footsteps for years to come. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

To the O'Connor Family,

May God bless you in this time of sorrow. We did not know Bob personally, but we did know that he was a great leader for the City of Pittsburgh, and a wonderful man. Bob showed the people how to work together. May we continue to work together to achieve the dreams for the City of Pittsburgh.

I can't stop thinking about the Man, the Mayor, the Possibilities, he would have brought to us.I can only imagine what his family must be going through. His smile, his hand shake, that funny, funny picture of him in the black ladies hat; I just love that picture. My heart hurts for us all, I'm mourning as though I've lost a personal friend. It's so sad that he was taken so soon, God must have needed another kind soul in his Army.

To Mrs. O'Connor and Family:

It saddens me that my fear of being shooed away prevented me from a perfect opportunity to meet such a great man.

I observed four men sitting in a booth at Vento's Pizza and all were pretty much average-looking, middle-aged men. But, the smiling, white-haired man kind of stood out and then, it finally hit me. That's Bob O'Connor, the one running for Mayor. EVERYONE seemed to know him; at least, they all talked to him like they did. For some reason, I convinced myself that he might not appreciate being interrupted by me.

Not knowing him personally, I thought, that's just the politician in him--keep smiling--win votes.

How sad that thought makes me now. The smile was real, it was really real. What politician do YOU know who talks about "redd'n up" communities, or "telling someone you love them" or calls to ask, "what can I do for you."

By the way he lived, Mr. O'Connor practiced what he preached--Irish, Jewish, African American living together in love and harmony--what a beautiful testament to his all-inclusive policies!

Mr. O'Connor was the epitomy of many things for me. His strong work ethic paralleled what I was taught about work. Just being nice to people, being honest, and shunning no person seems to be the way he lived.

What I have seen in the paper and on the TV has encouraged me, not only as a Pittsburgher, but as a human being. I loved the smiling eyes that I saw that day in Vento's. This was a man who not all of us knew PERSONALLY, but one thing is for sure. his PERSONALITY certainly will permeate Pittsburgh in years to come.

Rest in Peace, Mr. O'Connor. May all Pittsburghers pull together to complete your dreams. GOD BLESS THE O'CONNOR FAMILY AND THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH

You have touched the hearts of many people God has sent for his Angel and you could not refuse his call either, you do have trouble saying "no", like one CNN report said by either your people of the city of Pittsburg Pa or the call of God.

Bless you and all the people you have touched in your short time here on earth.

To The O'Connor family,

I send to you my heart felt sympathy. I am a native of Pgh, and the rest of my family still and always will reside there. My family lost my brother to a cancer which spread to the brain, recently. He passed away only 19 days after being diagnosed. We felt your pain when we heard of The Mayors diagnosis. We seemed to re-live the nightmare we went through as we heard of The Mayors symptoms and decline. He is out of pain now and at peace. My familys thoughts and prayers have been with you and will continue as you cope with your loss.

I met Mayor Bob on one occassion. I was coming from a pizza shop on Penn Avenue in Garfield Area of the city. When I suddenly ran in to him with my box, he laughed and smiled and ask me for a slice (joking around). Everysince then I knew he was a special person and he really was trying to clean up the area and at first I thought no one cared, but he really proved me wrong and I thank him alot for that. He was loved by many especially me and will never be forgotten at all. My deepest sympathy to the O'Conner family. (He Really Was A Great Man)

Mrs O'Connor and Family,

I am not from Pittsburgh And I am Ashamed To say that I honestly didnt know much about you husband until recently... but one thing I have learned is that he was an AMAZING Man. I have been following his condition for the last few weeks after seeing a news clip on the pittsburgh news. He was only the Mayor for 8 months and the Love that the City of Pittsburgh expressed for him was Truly touching... and what was more amazing was the love that he showed back for the city that supported him so much...I watched More then one of the news broadcasts with tearful eyes. My heart goes out to you and your family (the city of pittsburgh included)

God Bless

Dear O'Connor Family:

Thank you so much for sharing your husband and father with the City of Pittsburgh. Along the way, you gave up so much, so he could do so much. Your sacrifice will be remembered by many. He was loved by Pittsburgh because he listened to everyone's story. He was accessible to all. Bob O'Connor was the only politician in a long time that didn't make you wince. He had a dream in a cynical world. He MADE that dream possible. As Pittsburgher's our hope for this city was restored. But I think we feel cheated. He made us all feel better and proud of Pittsburgh. And he is gone too soon. Mr Mayor, you have left a huge hole in our hearts. We love you!!! For his family, I am truly sorry for your sadness.

Words cannot express the deepest sympathy that I feel for the O'Connor family. I never met Mayor O'Connor, but with the images that he portrayed, you felt like you had known him all of your life. He was a truly caring and genuine person. You have alot to be proud of with all of his accomplishments and Mayor O'Connor has alot to be proud of also with his family. Your family has shown such tremendous strength over the past couple of months and you have been such an inspiration to all of us. I have been so saddened by all of this and yesterday, I felt a ray of sunshine when my little 8 year old daughter said to me..."Mom, do you think that we could go to the cemetery where Mayor O'Connor is buried and plant just one flower for him so that we could leave room for other people that loved him to plant flowers for him also?" I will never forget those words of inspiration. Please take care of yourselves and stay strong...we will all be praying for you.

The O'Connor Family:

My father was in Shadyside Hospital this past March, and I ran into Mayor O'Connor in the hallway. I worked with him years ago when I was with the Pittsburgh Zoo. Always being kind, he stopped and talked to me, wondering what I was doing now. I explained I was in marketing in Wisconsin. He asked me to consider coming back to Pittsburgh, saying that young people are needed there. I told him, get some jobs here and I'm back. He smiled and said he was definitely working on it. I know he was, I truly believe that as he was always a good person who believed in the City.

My heart and prayers go out to you during this time of loss. His memory is stellor in the minds of so many people...even those of us living far from home.
