It must have been 1967 when I met Dr. Chang and his family for the first time. Along with Hagen Koo, Dongyul Lee, Jooik Kim, TH Oh et al. He was then driving a dark brown(!) Impala, perhaps 62 or 57 model. It was huge. Everybody can sit comfortably from UBC to their home. On Friday evenings and driving back to our dormitory Saturady wee hours. Drinking and singing were what we did. Wholeheartedly. This is before karaoke was available but chopsticks were. We listened to his laser-sharp wits and analysis of current events ranging from his recallection of Walter Cronkite on JFK's assassination to a new development called credit card. He never used such an expression as slightly pregnant: either you are pregnant or not. To him there is no gray color. Well, after all, he was a math professor. We, at least I, were still in impressionable age and have inherited much of his way of life and thinking. All said, we just loved this man and I will cherish these memories till my last breath. p/s At the end I bought the Impala from him. Essentially he gave it to me. I am sure I paid less than $100. Then promtly I had a car accident: in fact the first night we drove. To Vancouver downtown, drizzling winter night it was. pp/s All of sudden I remember him drinking champagne out of Mrs. Chang's high-hill shoes. I can't recall what was that all about though.
