Bonar Bain Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 22 to Feb. 23, 2005.
BAIN, Bonar Stewart It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Bonar on February 18th after a courageous 26 year battle with cancer. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 years, Vella; three sons, four daughters-in-law, thirty-three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one brother, nephews, nieces and extended families and a vast array of friends he met along the way. Bonar was predeceased by his parents and his younger brother Gordon. In addition to a distinguished business career in the airline, rental car and parking businesses, Bonar served with numerous charitable service and civic volunteer organizations throughout his life. He worked tirelessly on projects and with groups who sought to make his community a better place for its citizens. Organizations like the Lions Club, Yellowhead Highway Association, Skal Club, Edmonton Airports Authority and the Downtown Business Association are examples of just a few. Bonar felt that a person should always give back to the community in which one lives and he dedicated his life to this belief. He met his battle with cancer with the same vigor in which he lived his life. An ongoing fight, he me the challenges with honor, dignity, grace, courage and an always positive attitude. He never once complained of his condition, instead he counseled other patients through his experiences and sat on Cross Cancer Institute committees dedicated to improving the lives of prostate cancer patients and early detection of the disease. The family wishes to extend its thanks to the staff of the Cross Cancer Institute who cared so passionately for Bonar throughout his illness. Our thanks also go to the staff of the Edmonton General Hospital Palliative Care (9Y) for their care and understanding in Bonar's final days. Thanks to the many friends and neighbors who showed such support for Bonar and his family throughout his illness. To his many friends - when you laugh, think of him. For his keen sense of humor, his love of people and his dedication to his family and friends will be the things we will remember and miss the most. Cremation has taken place. At Bonar's request, no service will be held. He will be interred in the Westlawn Memorial Gardens in the near future, and friends are invited to visit him there. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bonar's name may be made to the Cross Cancer Institute or the General Hospital Palliative Care program. Howard & McBride Westlawn Chapel 484-5500
