Mr. Broadwater was one of the true greats at the St. Bernard's School. A vital part of the fabric and link to the legacy that remains New York City's finest elementary school.

Always draped in a stylish bowtie, bespectacled, with a wonderfully creased fedora nearby, Mr. Broadwater and his endless cigarette ash was to the St. Bernard's literary culture what Y.A. Title was to N.Y. Giants football.

When I graduated in June 1974, Mr. Broadwater had affirmed his place as the gatekeeper of The Budget and all things written at 4 East 98th Street.
