Brendan Woodworth Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 22, 2019.
Brendan "Melrose" "Woody" Woodworth of Melrose, age 24, died peacefully with family at his side on November 22, 2019. Brendan is survived by his beloved parents, Alan and Maureen (Kenny), and his cherished sister and best friend, Meghan, all of Melrose. Brendan is also survived by his devoted grandparents, Patrick and Carole Kenny of Everett. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Margaret Woodworth. Brendan's loving family also included his many aunts and uncles: Sheila, Steve, Diane, and Lyle all of Melrose; Stephen of Bourne, MA; James of Malden; Patrick and Wendy of Hamilton; Jennifer of Surprise, AZ as well as many special cousins: Lauren, Kathryne, Nicholas, Caroline, Madison, Kelsey, Liam, Sean, Keith and Emily. Brendan received a heart transplant at eight weeks of age and because of the kindness and generosity of his donor he brought 24 years of joy to all who knew him. Thanks to the expert care of an amazing and devoted team at Boston Children's hospital led by Brendan's admired cardiologist, Leslie Smoot, MD, Brendan lived an accomplished life. Brendan attended Melrose Public Schools (Horace Mann and Melrose Middle School) and graduated Pope John XXIII High School in Everett, class of 2014. He received a BA degree in Communications and Professional Sales from Plymouth State University, Plymouth NH, class of 2018. Brendan was just getting started in his professional sales career. He was employed at Staples Corporation as a business to business sales associate. He loved the challenge of connecting with prospective clients. He was recently recognized for quarterly quota achievements and was proud to be part of the Staples team. Brendan's passion was sports; both playing and spectating. He played youth sports in Melrose including hockey, baseball, and lacrosse. At Pope John, he continued playing varsity hockey and baseball. Brendan was an avid Boston sports fan and was especially devoted to the Red Sox and Bruins. In his quest to visit every MLB park, Brendan visited eight but none compared to his love of Fenway. He was recognized as a Red Sox/Children's Hospital Shining Star in an on-field ceremony; one of his finest childhood memories. Brendan traveled extensively with his parents, sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Family trips included multiple trips to Disney as a boy. More recently Brendan visited St. Thomas, the British Virgin Islands and skiing at Breckinridge, Colarado. With his parents and sister, Brendan celebrated his college graduation with a memory filled tour of Italy. Brendan's most cherished vacations were spent on Cape Cod. He loved spending time with family and friends by the ocean. Brendan lived well and with purpose. He was truly a special and unique young man who had every gift but years. He was fiercely loyal and always a true friend. He was humble and genuine in the way he experienced the world. Being present and connected to family and friends was paramount to Brendan. Brendan's sense of humor was his greatest gift. You knew by the sparkle in his eye that a mischievous prank or outrageously funny comment was next. Brendan made our lives richer and our world better. His final gifts were his cornea and skin to enhance the lives of others. In honor of Brendan, please consider registering to be an organ and tissue donor at: donatelifenewengland.org. Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Friday, November 29, 2019 from 3:00-7:00PM. A Celebration of Brendan's life will be held at the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, 355 Franklin St. Melrose on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 10:30AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully in vited to attend. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Brendan's memory to: Boston Children's Hospital, 300 Longwood Avenue, Boston MA 02115 or Make-A-Wish Foundation, 133 Federal Street, Boston, MA 02110

Dear Alan, Maureen and Meghan,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Brendans death. I only knew him through his proud fathers stories and pictures. What an accomplished and inspiring young man he grew to be.
I hope it provides some comfort to know that others share your grief and are keeping you all in thoughts and prayers. Wonderful that Brendan was an organ recipient and donated in death.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Sharon Mathews

Brendan was a very special guy. He was always courteous and respectful, very funny, had a great laugh, and was passionate and caring. He always put a smile on our faces. There is no other way of saying it--he had a big heart.

We have such fond memories of Brendan from times at Good Harbor to eating afterwards at Woodman's, to talking Red Sox and politics, (yes, in 2016, he "felt the Bern") to just having him come over our house. It was always a pleasure to see him.

We all had Brendan for too short a time, but his light will never fade. He will be with us always and we'll forever remember that big heart and that twinkle in his eyes.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I remember Brendan from the Horace Mann School. He was such a wonderful young man. Meghan when you were in Kindergarten and saw your brother in the hall, lunch, or recess you would have the biggest smile. I know Brendan will be forever missed. My thoughts are with you ♥

Brendan, you will always be one of the people I think about when reflecting on my college experience. You were one of my classmates (one of the first I met when I started college as an international student), one of my friends, and you were never afraid to stop and talk to me. Thank you.

The last time we saw each other was when you were delivering food to the Smith building and I opened the door for you, and on your way to beginning your career. Even in your rush, you took the time for me and shook my hand.

Thank you for all these gestures, and no matter how small. I hope you knew that you always brightened my day with just you wearing your heart on your sleeve. Always an inspiration to me, and always my friend.

Sending thoughts and prayers with family, friends and all your loved ones from the UK.

So, so sorry. Words cannot express.

I adored Brendan. He was a shining star with an amazing attitude about life.

I so much enjoyed spending Summers in the Cape with him, watching him grow up. His great attitude and sense of humor were infectious. It was a privilege to be part of his life.

I'm so sorry. I wish I could come to the services tonight. What a difficult time and how generous for you to still give while grieving. There are no words great enough to overcome such a profound loss, I hope you can all be together as a family.

Dear Alan, Maureen & Meghan,
One of our joys was knowing Brendan as a playful young child and then as an engaging young man. Alan and Maureen, you gave Brendan 24 years of a fruitful, loving life and Meghan you were like two peas in a pod.
Brendan packed a lot into 24 years and certainly more than some do in a lifetime.

Nick has lost a caring, fun loving buddy and our community, and the world in general, has lost a bright, shining star.

Brendan left us way too early but not too early to mark his mark and always be remembered as a good friend and a kind and gentle boy and young man.

With much love and sympathy,
Maureen, Pat & Nick DeVivo

I am so sorry to hear of Brendan's far too early passing. We had lots of fun in 5th grade at Horace Mann. He and his posse were always up to something. I'm glad to hear he lived a purposeful life, but I never had any doubts.
