Brett Upchurch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 13, 2017.
Brett Stephen Upchurch was born 6/21/1985 to parents Stephen Richard Upchurch and Carla Dianne Blakley Upchurch in Houston, Texas where he resided most of his life. Brett graduated from Cypress Creek High School in 2003, earned his Bachelor's of Science degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Health Education from Sam Houston State University in 2008. He was a lifelong member of the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America earning his Eagle Scout award in 1999 at the age of 13. He also earned the Venturing Silver award, Sea Scout SEAL and Quartermaster awards. He participated in the 2nd Annual William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup, qualifying for the Kiwi Cup and was honored with an article in the Boy Scouts of America magazine in 2004.

After graduating from SHSU Brett started his teaching and coaching career in Vernon, Texas, coaching football, wrestling, baseball and track. On 12/6/2008 he married Christina Lynn Wilson. In 2010 they moved to Waxahachie and he continued his career as a teacher and coach in Mesquite ISD. He was blessed with his first child, Zane Cade Upchurch on 9/03/2010. After a brief stint in the oil field working with Cetco Energy Services, Brett chose to spend more time with his family and returned to his passion for teaching. He was blessed with his second child, Piper Henley Upchurch on 1/19/2013. Brett returned to Houston in 2013 with his family to be closer to his childhood home. This allowed him to pursue his love for coaching in the school district where he was raised. He continued his teaching and coaching in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD at Hopper Middle School where he taught P.E. and coached football and track. In 2016 he started coaching wrestling at Cypress Springs High School as well.

Brett was a lifeguard and taught swimming lessons at the YMCA when he was in high school. He was also a lifeguard at Seven Coves and SHSU which is where he met his wife, Christina who was also a lifeguard.

Brett loved being outside and went hunting with his father for the first time when he was 4 years old. He continued that tradition by taking his son, Zane on his first hunting trip when he was 4. He enjoyed spending time on the family farm in Fairy, Texas. He loved spending time with his children. Brett was a cyclist who participated many times in the MS 150, one year as a Ride Marshall.

He was an active member of the CrossFit family eventually receiving certification as a CrossFit Level 1 coach. He would take his kids with him and they loved working out along side of him.

In addition to his wife, children and parents, left behind to remember Brett are his brother Jason Upchurch and wife Brenda, sister Lauren Upchurch and husband Tyler Milton, sister Brynn, brother-in-law Waylon Wiley and wife Ashley, niece Chlöe Upchurch, nephews Waylon Wiley, Jr., Samuel Wiley, Kolby Wiley, Robert Wiley, aunts, uncles and many cousins.

I'd fallen out of contact with Brett after high school, and just now finding out the news that he's passed on has hit me like a sledgehammer.

Brett was always an inspiration to me. Even as a teenager, his tenacity, and resolve left an impression on my life. From playing sports with him to walking the path to Eagle Scout together, Brett was always the leader, and the type of person I wanted to be. I wish I'd have kept in touch with him, and seen the man he became.

Rest well Brett, I'll never forget the incredible times we've shared.

Brett. To me, he was a great influence in coaching. i remember in middle school when me and him started talking, making jokes and stuff. I felt heartbroken about the news. God made a strong, positive and nice man like Brett Upchurch. All prayers go to his family, i know that felt hard for them as much as i have. May God rest his soul and i'll never ever ever and i repeat NEVER forget about this man. That man was the word of wisdom to football players. (he always knew what to say). R.I.P. to Brett Upchurch: my idol, my friend.

Still hard to wrap my brain around that you are gone. I still think I'll drive by your parents house and see you outside. It will be hard when football season comes around and I don't see you on the field coaching your team. I'll miss seeing your k8ds in the stands cheering you on.

You are well loved by everyone. Hope you realize that. You are missed dearly.

What an accomplished and special young man: son, brother, husband, father, Brett Upchurch was. He is definitely gone too soon. Thank heaven that he lived, leaving a positive presence in all who love him still. Please accept our prayers and love during this sad time of learning how to live without him being physically present. God bless all the Upchurch family and friends in mourning for Brett. May he now rest in peace.

I search for words and they all seem insufficient to express my heart. My memories of Brett go back many years to 5th grade Sunday school classes, scouts and MS150 rides. Then to learn he was marrying a P.E.O. Sister brought great joy. To Carla, Steve, Brinn, Christina, the children , family and many friends, my deepest sympathy. He was a light to many and is gone too soon. My prayers will be ongoing.
