When we were on our way to Allen Middle back in 1989 I had a crush on his GF Nikki. I was 11 and overwhelmed by hormones but I managed to speak to her one morning while she was getting on the bus with Brian. I hadnt even considered that I might get beat up by her BF. I told her I thought she was nice and looked pretty and she blushed and smiled and thanked me. Brian, to his credit, Smiled at me and pat me on the back and told me that was a nice thing to say then moved on. It always stood out as out of the ordinary that he would make that first moment in my life a good one the way he did.

To the family and loved ones of Brian,
Affectionately known to most as "DeGraph", he had one of the biggest personalities of anyone you could ever meet and was always the life of the party. He had such a great spirit and was one of the kindest and most loving people that I've ever met. It was a pleasure to know him and to call him friend for many years. He will truly be missed and may He Rest in Peace.

I met Brian through the Peer Support community and knew right away that he was an incredible man that really cared about others. We stayed connected supporting one another in providing support to our patients and as as recently as March 15 he sent me resources for somebody I was working with. I just left the service where they had to turn people away because there was such an outpouring of love and support for him and his time on this earth. I am honored to have known Brian., or as I call him, Cowboy. Rest in the arms of our Savior, Cowboy.

To the entire family, friends and co-workers of Brian,
I share in your sorrow. I worked with Brian at Aycock Middle School. He was a delight to be around, and the students loved Mr. "D"!! He encouraged the students to do their best and was sort of a "big brother" if you will to many. He had a way of explaining things to them as only he could do, and his ingenuity was remarkable. He truly cared about people!! I pray that God will give you comfort during this very difficult time and know that Brian touched so many lives and although he is no longer present his PRESENCE still remains!
God bless you all!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the DeGraphenreid family and my Dudley High School family during this difficult time. Brian was a friend to all he came in contact with. He always greeted me with a smile, a hug, and a genuine inquiry about how I was doing. While his time here was shorter than we would have liked, his impact is long lasting. He touched a lot of lives and he will be missed.

Like so many that I know that are shocked that Brian's spirit has returned back from where we've come from (which seem so soon), his spirit was such that it reached back to our Father and he took him back because the ground that he developed from was so blessed that he out grew his vessel. I was truly pleased to have shared his type of spirit at some of the public schools in this county. I could count on Brian at times to have my back on many occasions, then we would talk about my ties to the Ville (Asheville) and our families. Gone and not forgotten !

Tyiesha, Breana and the family & friends of Brian DeGraphenreid, we offer our sincere condolences to you all. Death is never easy. We as humans have a desire for our loved ones to remain with us forever. We want to always be able to see their face, their smile, hear their voice and feel their touch. It's hard to fathom "Goodbye"; to wrap our minds around the absence of their presence. While we trust God to carry us through, the pain and emptiness is still so surreal. Please know that we love you and are praying for you during this difficult time. We understand it will be awhile before you even come out of the daze and shock of understanding that Brian is really gone and our hearts hurt with you and for you. We are always just a call or stop-by away whenever you need us. Love Grandma & PawPaw

Brian was such a blessing to those who knew him. He was always so positive as we knew him as a young child, teen and young adult. We enjoyed activities with him and his family at Dudley. I enjoyed working with him at Mendenhall. He always had a kind word, a bit of good humor and that smile that lit up a room. He never forgot you and how important you were to him. Brian was a leader who enjoyed guiding and teaching out students and others in our community to be their best selves. He sure made our world a better place. Brian was important to our family. He will be so missed. His family is in our thoughts and prayers. Love in Christ, Bob and Judy Mays
