Brian EDWARDS Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Oct. 22 to Oct. 24, 2016.
BRIAN GORDON EDWARDS
Brian Gordon Edwards, born November 4, 1943, of Saskatoon, SK and formerly of Montreal, Quebec, loving husband to Louise, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2016. Predeceased by parents, George and Jessie (Renshaw) Edwards; and survived by his brother, Cliff Edwards (Brigitte), sister Barbara (Pierre) St. Jacques; children, Gordon Edwards, Corrie (Hugh) Wheeler, Carey (Sherri) Edwards, Kelly Edwards (Eileen); grandchildren, Samantha, Spencer, Avery, Isaac, Jacob, Lynzee, Logan and Courtney; and several nieces and nephews. Brian, as a professional musician for 45 years, was lead singer, bass player and co- writer for the '60s rock band "Mashmakhan" resulting in the hit song, "As The Years Go By". Brian later formed a group "Riverson", both being recorded at Columbia Records, New York, USA. In the '70s Brian teamed with singer Louise Rockwood of Toronto (whom he later married) and they jointly performed on his brother Cliff Edwards' Montreal CFCF T.V. show "Hurtin' Songs". Moving to Saskatoon they became a duo; Brian and Louise performed in local clubs and later attended the U of S with Brian studying towards a Bachelor of Music Degree, majoring in Composition while Louise majored in Performance. Brian's secondary passion was carpentry, designing and building a Cape Cod house on 40 acres outside of Saskatoon. Later moving to Calgary to perform in clubs, the duo subsequently left to entertain on the Princess Cruise Lines for 5 years, returning to Saskatoon in 2000. Brian lived life to the fullest with a great sense of humour and passion while thriving on change. Analytical and resolute, with fairness for all, he will be incredibly missed by Louise, family and friends. In lieu of flowers, make donations to The American Federation of Music (AF of M) at your local branch, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan in memory of Brian. Many thanks to the doctors and nurses of CCU at Royal University Hospital, for the generosity and support of Louise's sister, Lillian Brown, other family members and friends. A Celebration of Brian's Life will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28, 2016 at Windsor Chapel (704 Windsor Street) in Saskatoon. If you are unable to attend, you may post condolences at www.mourningglory.ca. Livestream webcasting of the service is available online at www.windsorchapelsaskatoon.com. I was so saddened to read of Brian's passing. My condolences to all the Edwards family.
I remember Brian from our LTM years. He was always kind, friendly and so very talented. It was inspiring to read these qualities touched so many people and defined his life.

Dear Louise and family,

We are so very saddened to learn of Brian's passing.

Growing up, my sisters and I idolized you both - Louise and Brian were our famous auntie and uncle with kind hearts and the beautiful, harmonizing voices. I remember listening to "The Hard Part Begins" and "We'll Go Dancing" as a young girl, in awe. Hearing your much-loved rendition of "The Rose" during the service brought tears to my eyes, not only of grief, but also of awe over its beauty.

Though we shared relatively few times together over the years, I have some great memories of Brian, and Louise and family - most notably, time at the school house, the Christmas spent with our family in the early '80s, and, of course, your wedding. It's bittersweet reading the awesome tributes to Brian here, and hearing the lovely memories of family during Brian's memorial service. They helped better connect me to the man I didn't know that well personally, but whom I loved and always knew to be funny, gentle, and kind.

Sending our most heartfelt condolences, and love.
Rest in peace, Brian.

My most sincere condolences to the Edwards family. I grew up in Two Mountains and remember Brian, Cliff and Barbara as being such a musical family. Brian helped me get started as a Bass player. My first memory of hearing a live band at a dance club was Nymark's about 1965 when Brian was playing with Trevor and and Pierre. RIP Brian, and thanks for the memories

I am so sorry to learn of Brian's passing. We attended LTMHS together although he was a year or two ahead of me. And I had the pleasure of seeing Brian in his Mashmakan band at Belle Neigh back in the late 60's - along with Ray Blake and Pierre Senechal. I also knew his brother Cliff and sister Barb. Our band was the Count Royals and Cliff's was the Counts Four. We like to think we are invincible but that is sadly just not true. I have such good memories of Brian although we have been out of touch since that time. Rest in Peace Brian - you were one the good guys and will be so sadly missed. My condolences to all.

Dear Louise,

where did all the years go? I still have a copy of your wedding invitation which you asked me to prepare for your wedding August 4th 1984. And also the words you and Brian wrote and sang a song for me on my 50th Birthday. It was shortly thereafter that I left Saskatoon on my odyssey of recovery from that car accident and other losses,, but "as way leads onto way", I never returned. But those years and your songs and music still dance thru my memories still as fresh as the days they were created. The sorrow for me is that I never did see either of you again and now I see Brian's smiling face I realize what I have missed. So Louise please know that for me the memories of both of you are permanently etched in my mind and I am thankful that both of you were for a while a happy part of my life.

My deepest condolences to the Edwards family. I knew Brian since high school and I'd only been playing music for a few years when the band I was in decided we needed a singer. I heard Brian singing along with the jukebox at Saratoga beach and thought wow, he can really sing. Brian also became our bass player shortly after.
We shared the wild trip that was Mashmakhan and chose to continue our music adventure in Riverson. There were lot of miles, great shows and laughter until it was time to part ways.
I will remember my dear friend and colleague with love and great respect.

Rest in peace Brian

My sincere condolences to the whole Edwards Family on the loss of Dear Brian. I have some great memories of Brian and the laughs we shared on and off the road. He was such a talented musician and I'm proud to say that I shared many stages with him. I had lost touch with him over the years so to hear this sad news was quite a surprise. My thoughts are with all of you at this somber time. God Bless Brian.

Dear Brian, I had been thinking about you and wanting to get in touch. I'm so very sorry that we didn't get in touch. I had wanted to tell you how much I'd enjoyed playing and singing with you and Rayburn in Riverson. I was listening to some songs from our Riverson album, and remembering what a beautiful voice you have and that you were an excellent bass player. I miss those days too, when we were all together in Lake of Two Mountains - you, me and Rayburn and Lisa. It was a beautiful time of my life.

I'm so very sorry, Brian, especially for all your family and loved ones who will miss you so much.

Rest peacefully, my friend, I will offer prayers and good thoughts for you and your family.

With love from your friend,
Frankie

Dear Edwards family,
I loved Brian and tried for a long time to find him. We played together in a couple of groups in Montreal before he joined Mashmakhan and were friends still when he and Rayburn Blake and Frankie Hart created a great group called Riverson. Brian believed in me and was the first to record one of my songs "Stoney Day' on the River son album. I love his family so much and Brian will always be remembered for his iconic vocals and his stellar bass playing, his sense of fun and good humour. Rest in Peace dear Brian. I will always remember you.

This is such a terrible loss for all who had the privilege of knowing Brian. He was always happy go lucky with a keen sense of humor and his stories that would make you laugh for hours. Even though he was a rock n roll legend to all that knew him he was just a friend. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to call him my friend. REST IN PEACE "POPS"
