Britton Murdoch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 22, 2025.
Britton "Britt" Murdoch, a lifelong member of Philadelphia's Main Line, passed away on September 8, 2025. Born in 1931 to Frank Britton Murdoch and Marguerite Kearney Murdoch, Britt graduated from the Episcopal Academy in 1949 and the University of Pennsylvania in 1953. He then served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, with deployment to Korea.

Britt was an accomplished athlete in his youth, playing football and excelling as a champion hurdler at Episcopal Academy. During college, he was a proud member of the nationally ranked Penn football team in 1952. He married Cora "Cokie" Maltz Williams, who predeceased him in 1968. Together, they raised three sons: Britton (Janice Hauptfuhrer), Winslow (Donna Brodsky), and Carter W. Murdoch (Beth Ann Maurer). Britt considered his sons his greatest achievement and endlessly enjoyed sharing stories about their lives. Britt later shared many happy years with Billie Strawbridge, until her passing in early 1979.

In 1980, Britt married Joan Humpton Harrison, and welcomed her children-Page Henderson (Jim), Charles "Chip" Harrison (Leanne), Pepper Harrison (deceased), Craig Harrison, and Holly Kolb (Andy)-into his life along with step grandchildren Tyler Harrison (Mandy), Charlie Harrison, Sophie Harrison, Zaidee Melikian (Armen), Harry Kolb and August Kolb. Joan also predeceased Britt, in January 2024.

Known as "Big Britt," he was treasured for his quick wit, warmth, and legendary storytelling, delighting generations of family and friends with his tales and wisdom. He is survived by his grandchildren-Sarah W. Murdoch (David),Britton

M. Murdoch (Claire), John H. Murdoch (Laura), William W. Murdoch (Zoe) , Amanda Joy Murdoch (deceased), Allison B. Murdoch, Jenna R. Murdoch, and Carter W. Murdoch Jr.-as well as 12 great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law, stepchildren, and an extended family whom he always showered with love, support, and affection. Britt's unconditional love for his family is an aspiration to us all.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Murdoch Family Scholarship Fund at the Episcopal Academy, 1785 Bishop White Dr., Newtown Square, PA 19073. Internment private; Services will be held on Saturday, September 27 at 11:30 am in St Davids Church, Wayne, PA (reception to follow).

Enjoyed Britt's company over the past several years, especially during our weekly luncheons at the Merion Cricket Club. He was always in a good humor, even when confined to a wheelchair, and it was a delight being in his company.
