Bruce Caley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 5, 2017.
Owen Bruce Caley, 77, of Lumberton, Texas, died on September 28, 2017, at home after a heroic battle from cancer. Bruce was born on August 6, 1940, in New Rockford, North Dakota to George Burdette Caley Jr and Evelyn (Olson) Caley.

In June of 1959, Bruce joined the Army and was a Medical Specialist stationed at the DMZ in South Korea. Bruce grew up in Hettinger, North Dakota where he called home until moving to Texas to work as a policeman for the Beaumont Police Dept. After leaving the force, he worked for Beaumont Motor Co., Sears Automotive and Kinsel Ford. In 1980, he was an independent Service Station owner for Exxon Oil Co. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, softball, golf, attending church and reading his Bible.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Betty; daughters, Deborah Knowles of Houston, TX, and Carla Behannon and her husband Barry of Lumberton, TX; brother George B. Caley III and his wife Linda of Winchester, VA; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, nieces and nephews.

Bruce was preceded in death by his father, mother and one sister, Janice Ulrich of Hayes, KS.

The family would like to say a thank you to all who prayed, called, sent cards, flowers and visited with Bruce.

Bruce was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Beaumont, Texas.

My sincerest condolences to the Caley family. Had I known Bruce was ill, I would have visited regularly. He was a true friend, and Bruce was one of the finest men I've ever known, honest as the day is long.

I remember years ago, Bruce accidentally installed the wrong oil filter for a customer. Oil leaked and the engine burned up. Out of his pocket, Bruce paid for a new motor. I could cite other instances of his honesty, but none of mechanical errors. He was an excellent mechanic and kept my old El Camino running for lots of years.

A good man with a wry sense of humor. I will be among the many who miss him. Again, my sympathies to the family.

We have wonderful memories of meeting up with Bruce and Betty each year at Branson or Gatlinburg. Our kids always enjoyed the "antics" of Uncle Bruce. We saw many shows featuring famous performers and shared many laughs. We will miss him. Linda and George Caley

Bruce was that "rare man" who loved and provided for his family. He was good to all and will be surely missed. The world is full of males, but real men are rare indeed. Bruce honored his God and his family. I Loved his great sense of humor! Heaven will be a greater place, but earth not so much. I am positive the golden gates of Heaven have far more beautiful golf courses. Who knows . . . you may even get to play with some of the Saints of old!! Jesus was into fishing, but who knows who your next golf buddy will be. Tell all the family "hello" and we surely miss you all.
