It is now 2022 and I was thinking of Dr Caruthers and had lost touch years ago. I served with him on the board of the Canadian PID Society for many years but was also a patient of his when I got ME along with my young daughter 35 years ago. I write this to the family because I want you to know how important he was in our family. I was a single parent and a registered nurse who contracted this debilitating illness and very sadly so did my daughter who was 11 at that time. There was little understanding or even care at that time and finding your father who was able to with all the complexity of compassion give us a sense that we were not lost as we were forgotten by medical profession up until his work and commitment to the disease. I spent 6 years mostly in bed and my daughter attended a semester adapted school program until she was able to graduate from high school. I went on to do much volunteer work in the women's disability movement and I wanted you to know that your father inspired both of us to keep on. I asked of him one thing. I said to him "Do not forget us" and because he never did and continued his work to have this disease recognized by the Canadian Center for Disease Control he was able to assist other physicians in the treatment of other ME/CFIDS clients. in my life and work I have learned that to have been possibly the most powerful medicine there could be. To be believed and to be passionate about making a difference in so many lives. I am so sorry for your loss and I wanted you to know that even after all these many years his kindness has never been forgotten.

Dr Bruce Carruthers,
Thank you for giving me hope with this illness (ME) and your great support while I was still at school. A lot of people had more hope because of your selfless work. Your listening was the best. Susana R.

Dear Dr Bruce's family,
How I'll miss his puckish humour. Please know that my life was enriched by his insightful sharing of yoga.

I never had the chance to meet Dr. Carruthhers, but just reading the notes about him makes me wish I had.

I'm in Canada with ME and proud that we have a fellow Canadian in Dr. Carruthers that wrote up the respected document CCC.

Many condolences and well wishes to the family. In the yogic tradition, I honour his divinity.

My condolences to Dr. Carruthers' family. I'm sure many patients, including myself, regret that we cannot offer a fraction of the peace and support that he provided as a physician.

He was a truly wonderful human being and it was a privilege to have met him.

I never had the opportunity to meet Dr. Carruthers, but I am one of the thousands that he helped through his dogged determination to bring ME/CFS to the ears of the right people. I've been ill 28 years, and only now is research gaining traction. I went 26 years before seeing a truly qualified physician for ME/CFS, and Dr. Carruthers' dedication to the cause kept me and others from losing all hope. So, here's to you Doc. And thanks to his family and friends who supported him while he was supporting us.

It is with sincere sadness, I learned of Dr. Bruce Carruthers recent passing. Bruce was a brilliant man, who was so loved by all who knew him. As a Physician, Friend and Colleague I shared in many memories with him over a thirty year history. There was no finer, caring or compassionate Physician, and those who shared their stories with him, found a kind and gentle listener; who not only believed them, but did every thing he could to help them! This included coming out of retirement more than once to continue to treat and support his patients!

His legacy leaves many years of dedicated research, medical care, published writings, teaching both medical and yoga students, and being a stellar member of the human race! His presence may have left us, but his work lives on. I know he takes with him the love, appreciation and respect of all who know just how very special a man he was!

My Condolences to his family, his friends and his Patients; for we know how very fortunate we were to have known this great and wise man, and have him in our lives! RIP Bruce. You Will Never Be Forgotten!

Peace, Love, & Light. Dr. Bruce Carruthers was a compassionate gentleman of the highest integrity. We wrote together since 1998, most notably the Canadian Consensus Documents for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Fibromyalgia, the International Consensus Criteria and the International Consensus Primer for ME. Dr. Carruthers will always be cherished and remembered for the gracious donation of his time and expertise to improve the quality of life of patients. Bruce was a truly valued friend.

To the Carruthers Family, I express my sorrow for your loss.

Dr. Carruthers was a respected and important contributor in the medical field and was an expert in ME.

His work, particularly in the development and implementation of the Canadian Consensus Criteria(CCC)and the ME International Consensus Criteria (ME ICC)advanced the science and treatment of ME.

He supported me, in my efforts as an ME advocate, to promote the use of the CCC and ME ICC for proper diagnosis and accurate research for patients.

He will be greatly missed by the ME community.

I was honoured to see Doctor Carruthers twice during the early 1990's. Of all the physicians I've encountered during my nearly 30 years with ME, he was the only one whose understanding was so accurate, it was difficult to believe he hadn't experienced the illness himself. Many thanks, Doctor Carruthers, for your devotion to your patients, and to the cause. May your contributions receive more widespread recognition, and appreciation, in the years to come.

So very sorry for your loss to all the Carruthers family. I had the pleasure and great luck to be one of the many me/cfs patients that he helped. From diagnosis ( at Galiano clinic ) to treatment protocol, to the many letters he wrote on my behalf. Dr Carruthers was responsible for validating this disease for me and many others, and provide helpful treatment protocol where there previously had been none . I appreciate that he dedicated many of his retirement years to returning to advocate for us. You all must be so proud of him and his legacy.

As an ME/CFS patient, I am very saddened by Dr Carruthers' death. He was one of far too few who actually understood this illness and tried to help patients with his work. I will always be thankful to him for his work on both the ICC and the CCC. All who are affected by his death are in my thoughts & prayers.

Dear Dr. Carruthers: Thank you so much for believing in me and taking on the difficult task of drafting the first ME/FM Clinical Definitions from which the doctors' panels were able to gleam the final definitions. Without you and Dr. Anil Jain, it would not have happened. Rest in Peace Dr. Carruthers
