Bruce Crager Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 29, 2024.
Bruce Lee Crager, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother, passed away December 19, 2024. At age 72, following a brave battle with liver disease, he left the world peacefully at his home in Houston, surrounded by loved ones.

A memorial service will be held on January 31 at 11 a.m. at Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Young Life Greater Houston Region, online at giving.younglife.org/BruceCragerMemorial; or by check to 900 Town and Country Lane, Suite 302, Houston, Texas 77024.

Survivors include his wife Karen; daughter Autumn and her husband Josh; son Chad and his wife Melissa; son Zach; brothers-in-law Mark and Tim; grandchildren Lainie, Josie, Oliver, Zadie, Wyatt and Lucy; nephew and nieces John, Jordan, Julia, Hannah, Hilary and Chandler; sister Teddi and brother Jack; and numerous in-laws, colleagues, and friends around the globe.

First and foremost, Bruce was a family man. After his own father left home when he was 10, Bruce took on the patriarchal duties in support of his single mom. He started his own family with Karen at age 21, when they settled in Houston. By the time his grandkids arrived, Bruce became leader of the Posse--his term for the youngsters, from his love of Western culture. For them, "Pop" served as a mentor, role model, entertainment guide and steadfast advisor.

To support his brood, Bruce worked in offshore engineering. At Texas A&M University--where he served in the Aggie Corps of Cadets and proudly wore his senior boots every day of his senior year--he graduated in the inaugural class of Ocean Engineering. He went on to become a sought-after expert in the field, working in leadership positions at firms including Oceaneering International, ABB Offshore Systems, INTEC Engineering, and Endeavor Management, where he served as President until his passing.

Bruce's work often took him around the world, and all his life he was an adventurer. While becoming an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 66 in Canyon, Texas, he discovered the joys of camping, fishing, hiking, skiing and traveling-which he reveled in throughout his life. He took his family on treks from Florida to Montana to their wintertime getaway of Telluride, Colorado. His BC Travel itineraries were the stuff of legend. At age 60, Bruce celebrated by taking a trip every month, from Brazil to Hawaii to Panama. He maintained fitness with a decades-long streak of daily exercise, including long walks wherever he went.

Underpinning it all, Bruce was a man of faith. Having grown up as a United Methodist, he joined the Baptist Church after he married Karen in 1973. By age 26, he was a Deacon in his church and a leader of the congregation. He taught Bible studies, led youth groups, coached soccer teams and continued to mentor the younger generation, guiding by example.

While hewing to his own code of honor, Bruce wasn't one to pass judgement on others. A lifelong teetotaler, he was often the life of the party. His buoyant optimism was infectious.

Whenever he got a phone call, he simply answered, "This is Bruce." Doubtless that's his greeting at heaven's door.

Bruce and I both played French Horn in the Canyon Eagles Band. We were in competition for first chair many times! He was loads of fun and we enjoyed FYI Sunday evenings.

Many prayers and memories for the family.

First time I met Bruce was in Galveston, where he was leading the conversion of the Zaphiro Producer FPSO: I used to work to Petrobras with offshore projects/operations and we imediatelly developed a mutual empathy not only on professional topics, but also on the personal matters. We had an agreement: every time he came to Brazil, I "bought" dinner while the opposite happened when I visited Houston. We talked about our respective family matters and give mutual advice. He was also very vocal on his work with the Church and community. We had opportunity to work with projects throughout time like Siri field Extended Well test and Papaterra field. Bruce was always in good mood and with a lot of energy. He used to commented very happy his vacations travels with Karen and kids/grandkids. I regret for not have gone to OTC Houston in 2024 when I could have met him: unfortunatelly I won´t be able to have dinner bought by him this OTC, next May. We would have a lot to talk about. I miss him a lot. My condolences to Karen and all Bruce´s family.

TO the Crager family:
This is in loving memory of the man you probably called "Pop" and whom I called "Boss".
In loving memory of his faith and devotion to God and His commandments,
In loving memory of his devotion to his family and loyalty to his friends,
In loving memory of his honor, ethics and professional integrity,
In loving memory of his success in this life and his footsteps to eternity,
I will miss him every time I call

When I joined Endeavor last year, Bruce was quick to welcome me and offer to meet me for lunch even though getting around was a struggle for him. Over lunch he told me a little bit about his story and gave me good counsel on getting started. A true gentleman. He will be missed. God Bless Bruce; Be thou at Peace.

I got to know Bruce from his Young Life involvement in Houston. One summer Bruce and Karen volunteered to go to YoungLives camp, our camp for teenage parents and their babies, and babysit kids during the camp events. Bruce and Karen both served so joyfully, and Bruce created an elaborate tunnel outside for the kids to play in- it was the talk of camp! It was an honor to serve with Bruce and learn from him and see how he joyfully served and loved people in whatever setting he was in. Bruce will be very missed!

My late wife and I came to know Bruce and his young family when they became members of First Baptist Church Spring Branch quite a few years ago. I was one of several deacons who quickly joined in support of his nomination to be ordained as an active member of our team. His dedication to his family and commitment to serve the entire membership fairly quickly led to his election as our youngest Deacon Chairman ever!

I crossed paths with Bruce over and over again throughout my life. As an Aggie '76, Bruce was in lots of my classes. I ended up in church with him for several years in Spring Branch; man that guy could sing some hymns! He helped me get my first offshore job and I ended my career with him at Endeavor. Bruce could make a deal with any client, with any terms, against steep odds. I asked him one day how he was able to be so successful at this. He told me "It's easy. Never, never, never, never, never give up!" I have to say, after knowing him for so long: It is with confidence that I can tell you that Bruce is now with our Savior, who never, never, never, never, never gives up on us, either. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.

Bruce and I were deacons at First Baptist Church, Spring Branch in Houston. I was a new deacon and he was the chairman of the board. This was a terrible time for that church and Bruce had to preside over meetings where the pastor was being dismissed.
Bruce´s professionalism and Godly leadership inspired me a few years later when I became chairman of the deacon board at FBC, Wylie, TX. His calm, reasoned leadership example helped me so very much. He will be greatly missed. I thank God for Bruce´s life of leadership and devotion to his family and to God.

I had the honor of working with Bruce at J. Ray McDermott. Bruce was always a high-energy forward thinker that was always willing to look challenges straight in the face and say "we can fix that, or we can do that" Bruce was always willing to mentor his junior engineers and staff. You will be missed Bruce

I have had the joy of knowing the fantastic Crager family for over 30 years. I was friends with both Zach and Autumn. When I was getting married, I didn't have any money to go on a honeymoon with my wife... I had just started working in full time ministry with Young Life.
Bruce was gracious enough to let my wife and I borrow their families vacation home in Colorado. It was a gift that was so generous and shocking, we couldn't believe it. At that time, my wife and I were so discouraged and scared because of just how difficult things were for us financially as we started our new life together. The Lord used Bruce and Karens kindness to remind us that we are gonna be ok and that The Lord is still in control. We had a truly amazing time and it helped set the tone for the last 17 years. No matter the circumstance, we can trust the Lord to look out for us. That gesture has left a permanent mark in our life and also the life of our daughters, that we truly can trust the lord with anything.... even a honeymoon. The Lord used Bruce and Karen to bless us beyond measure and I will forever be grateful for his unprompted gift. They showed us a love that we didn't know existed... a love that comes with no strings attached and is full of grace.

I had the pleasure of working with Bruce as a customer, as a member of our industry, as a mentor to both educators and students, and as inciteful and valuable as his thoughts and words were, it is his personality and heart that I will miss most.

I could tell any one of a number of great stories, but my first thought always goes back to his laugh the many times I introduced him to students that he was about to share his inspirational; career story with, where he revealed what he learned at each step of his amazing career. My introduction was always something on the order of: "Our next speaker is one of the smartest guys I know, and he will be sharing with you How to get fired and still end up the Winner" We laughed both before and after his presentation.

I will miss him a great deal!

Bruce and I knew each other while trying to get a grasp of the huge subsea market. I learned a lot about the industry and his profound professional and personal commitment not only to his career but his family. He will be missed. Peace and healing grace go to all his family.

I did not know Bruce--only OF him. But having read this loving tribute, I feel that I have some idea of who he was and what he did with his life. It may be after the fact, but I surely admire and respect him.
