Bruce Fishers C. Embrey Bruce Carter Embrey, age 81, of Fishers, Indiana (formerly of Peru), passed away at home on April 8, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on July 5, 1943, in Riverdale, Maryland, Bruce was the son of Chester Embrey and Hazel (Carter) Cook. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was a 1961 graduate of Warren Central High School. Bruce went on to earn his bachelor's degree in Accounting and Business from IUPUI in 1972, and later graduated cum laude from the Indiana University School of Law in 1976.
Bruce began his legal career in Peru, Indiana, in the office of Jim Volpert. In 1976, he was elected to the Miami County Court and subsequently became the first judge of the Miami Superior Court. In 1986, he was elected Judge of the Miami Circuit Court, a role he held until his retirement from the bench in 2002. Retirement, however, did not mark the end of his public service. He continued his legal career in private practice and served as City Attorney for Peru. He was later elected to two terms as the Miami County Prosecutor and, most recently, practiced with the law firm of Embrey & Embrey in Carmel.
Respected across Indiana's legal community and beyond, Bruce's keen intellect and commitment to justice left a lasting impact. He authored the original commentary on the Indiana Supreme Court's Child Support Guidelines. In recognition of his service to the state, he was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Bob Orr, one of Indiana's highest honors.
In addition to his judicial and legal work, Bruce was passionate about education and mentorship. He took great pride in teaching and sharing his legal knowledge, influencing many young professionals through the years. He taught trial advocacy around the country and annually at the Indiana University School of Law's trial advocacy program.
Bruce's dedication to his community was evident in every chapter of his life. He initiated and led the historical development of Miami's Fort in Peru and was actively involved in Leadership Miami County. A gifted speaker and storyteller, he served as Master of Ceremonies for many local and statewide events, including the Distinguished Young Women program. He was a lifetime member of the Peru Rotary Club, where he was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions.
Perhaps one of Bruce's most cherished roles was that of Ringmaster for the Peru Amateur Circus. Since becoming involved with the circus in 1981, and stepping into the role of Ringmaster in 1982, Bruce's voice became the heart of the show and his presence a constant source of inspiration for the youth who performed under the big top. His deep love for the circus and the children who brought it to life was unmatched, and he treasured every moment spent in that colorful, spirited world.
Outside of his professional and civic commitments, Bruce enjoyed time with his family, sailing in the Virgin Islands with his treasured friend John Nixon, playing golf, martinis, and savoring the occasional fine cigar. He was a proud participant in the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, walking and completing the race nine times with determination and spirit.
Bruce is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Cheryl (Pierce) Embrey; his three children, Brent (Kimberly) Embrey of Greenfield, Shannon (Travis Latta) Embrey of Peru, and Reid Embrey of Los Angeles, California; his "adopted" daughters Latoya Alexander Botteron (son Reagan) of Fishers and Greta Braga (Juliano) of Brazil and Orlando; his sister, Patricia Crews of Dallas, Texas; his brother, K. Douglas (Becky) Cook of Carmel; five grandchildren, Bailey (Rachel), Brody (Tanner), Sam, Madeline, and Elizabeth; and four great-grandchildren, Carter, Cecilia, Eileen and Coleson. He is lovingly remembered by many, especially those in his circus family and others whose lives have been touched by his kindness, humor, and care.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, H. Eugene Cook; and his nephew, Ike Crews.
A celebration of Bruce's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the Peru Circus Building. (154 N. Broadway in Peru, Indiana, 46970)
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Peru Circus City Festival.
