Bruce Douglas Porter
Sept. 18, 1952 ~ Dec. 28, 2016
Bruce Douglas Porter, loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 28th surrounded by his family. He fell ill in Moscow, Russia while serving as president of the Europe East Area of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He lived a full and active life despite many health challenges incidental to kidney failure almost twenty years ago. The guiding stars in his life were love of family and of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was happiest when enjoying time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Bruce was born on September 18, 1952 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Lyle Kay Porter and Wilma Holmes. The family grew to include four sisters, Rebecca Rogers (Gary), Pamela Hamblin (Randy), Carolyn Brustad (Roger), and Susan Grenfell. From gospel discussions with his father, Bruce developed a deep love of the scriptures. His mother encouraged Bruce, a natural bookworm, to participate in basketball, music, and a variety of school activities.
Bruce entered BYU as a David O. McKay scholar majoring in history and was the editor of Monday Magazine. His mission to Dusseldorf Germany deepened his testimony; Presidents Kindt and Poecker sparked his interest in spreading the gospel to Russia. He then began studying Russian at BYU which instilled in him a love for the peoples of Eastern Europe and launched him into a career in international politics.
After graduation, Bruce spent the summer of 1976 studying in St. Petersburg. He continued his education at Harvard University, earning a MS degree in Soviet Studies and a PhD in political science.
He married his eternal sweetheart, Susan Elizabeth Holland, whom he met at BYU, in the Washington D.C Temple on February 2, 1977. He was a devoted and loving husband throughout their almost forty years of marriage. They enjoyed a rich life together raising their family while living in Massachusetts, Germany, Virginia, and Utah. They were blessed with four children: David (Karen), Chris (Crystal), Lisa Brooks (Shawn), and Jennifer Anderson (Rhett). Bruce was a kind mentor, teacher, playmate, counselor, and friend to his children, who remember fondly playing word strategy games, wrestling after work, and talking one-on-one in the living room.
His career in political science spanned government, business, and academia, including time at the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Board for International Broadcasting, the Northrup Corporation, and BYU. An accomplished writer, Bruce authored numerous articles and books, including "War and the Rise of the State" and "King of Kings."
In April 1995, Bruce was called into full-time church service as a member of the Quorum of the Seventy in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints--a calling to which he dedicated the rest of his life. Bruce served in Eastern Europe (1995-1997 and 2014-2016), on the Middle East Africa North desk, and in other headquarters assignments.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Susan, their four children and spouses, eleven grandchildren, and four sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, January 5th at the Bountiful Utah Central Stake Center on 640 South 750 East in Bountiful. Viewings will be held on Wednesday, January 4th from 6:00-8:00pm at Larkin Mortuary on 260 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City and on Thursday, January 5th from 9:00-10:20am before the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to LDS Charities or to the Church's General Missionary Fund.

I first met Bruce over 40 years ago (in 1976), during his (and my) first trip to Russia. We were both students together in Leningrad at a Russian-language program and became friends. We also were graduate students together at Harvard. I was very saddened to hear recently of his passing. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Sincerely,

I was blessed to take two political science classes from Elder Porter at BYU. He was a wonderful professor-- so witty and engaging. We all loved learning from him. Even though it was obvious that he was a brilliant man, he was always very humble. It was only gradually that we students realized what a renowned expert he was in his field because he never boasted about his accomplishments.

One of my fond memories of him came on a day when my husband was out of town and couldn't watch our infant daughter while I was in class. Dr. Porter didn't mind if I recorded the lecture in case I had to step out with a fussy baby. However, we had a pop quiz that afternoon. I was mortified when my daughter began to cry right after we started the quiz. As I was trying to rush through it, Dr. Porter walked over to me. I expected to see a disapproving look on his face because I knew that it was difficult for the other students to concentrate with such noise. Instead, he very sweetly and kindly took my crying baby and went into the hall where he walked back and forth with her until I was finished.

Though the incident was small, I was overwhelmed by Elder Porter's mercy, understanding, and humility. I believe that there are very few professors of his position and stature who would have extended such kindness in that moment.

That was the semester that he was called to the Seventy and our whole class was sorry that we wouldn't be able to study with him any more. I am grateful for all of the knowledge and wisdom that Elder Porter shared as a professor and then through his service in the Seventy.

My prayers go out for his family.

My name is John Del Porto. I had the honor of taking care of Elder Porter's dialysis machine 11 years ago when I worked for the U of U Dialysis program. Both of you were always so kind to me. Having had 2 wives pass away, I am so greatful for eternal marriage and the plan of salvation. May God bless you and your family.

Bruce was the best person to work under as I started my family, always emphasizing that family comes first. As my son had a chronic illness, this support was invaluable. His faith and family focus was a model for all. Very fondly, Pat Sowick & family

Bruce was the Sunday School teacher in the Weston Ward while they lived in Massachusetts, long ago. He was absolutely the very best Sunday School teacher I ever had the opportunity to listen to, and we've had some good ones in the greater Boston area, including other GAs. When so many Sunday School lessons are repetitive, even boring, Bruce's were always chock full of things I didn't know..history, culture, influences, context....and with all he taught, intertwined was always a strong affirmation of spirituality in each lesson. They really were quite perfect! I kept hoping he'd be over today's Sunday School lessons, which are a far cry from the stimulating and motivating lessons that Bruce taught. Blessings, Susan. You two have been such a terrific influence on so many people over the years. We old-timers in Boston won't forget you two!

Dear Susan-It is with sorrowful hearts we write after learning of the passing of your Dear Eternal Companion. Words cannot describe the loss which will be felt throughout the Church the world over to no longer have available the advice, counsel & faithful example of Bruce's dynamic leadership, not to speak of you & your family's loss. It has been inspiring to observe the kind, loving, faithful service you both have so unselfishly given. Our Love and Prayers!

Dear Porter Family: I was saddened to hear of the passing of Elder Porter. We grew up together in Albuquerque. Dear Susan and family,
We first met you and Bruce in Frankfurt at a mission president's seminar while we served in the Romania Bucharest Mission. You were responsible for the delicious food, which you prepared and served with such loving and tender care. Even more importantly, you and Bruce made us feel at ease and at peace in our new and challenging circumstances. We had many occasions thereafter to interact with our dear Elder Bruce D. Porter who always had kind and reassuring words to offer and and helpful advice to give. He was a man of deep spiritual incite and enormous capacity and will be missed, not only by you, his beloved eternal companion, and family, but by us and members and friends of the Church at large whom he served so well.

Dearest Susan and family,
With gratitude and tender hearts we send our love and thoughts. Elder Porter blessed our lives for the better. I will forever remember the time Elder Porter took to sit down with me and counsel me during a very difficult time in my life. The priesthood blessing he administered to me, my son and daughter was profound and so appreciated. These blessings have given me strength through the years. We honor him and the great life he lived. He was an extraordinary man of God. He will be missed.

Dear Sister Porter and family,

We offer our heart felt condolences to you and your family. Elder Porter was truly a servant of the Lord. He emulated the love, teachings and example of the Savior in his service to the Church and the members throughout the world. It was an honor to serve under his leadership and mentorship when I was called to serve as the first district president for the Kabul Afghanistan Military District. He was a friend and helped me as we moved forward with organizing the military district in Afghanistan.
Susan and I will always fondly remember meeting you and our meeting with Elder Porter for the first Middle East Africa North Area Council meeting in October 2009 at the BYU Jerusalem Center. Elder Porter's dedication and testimony of the Gospel was an example for all of us to follow. May God bless you and your family.
