Bruce RASKOB Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Aug. 17 to Aug. 18, 2013.
RASKOB, Bruce Richard
With great sadness, the family and friends of Bruce Richard Raskob announce his death in Vancouver on August 11, 2013, after a lengthy, courageous, and good-humoured battle with cancer. Born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, September 3, 1951, Bruce was raised in Saskatoon, where he excelled at sports and academics. This combination of abilities gained him a hockey scholarship at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, and he proudly played for Saskatchewan in the Canada Winter Games. Injuries ended his hockey career, but not his competitive spirit. Bruce later attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he received a B.A. and an M.A. in English Literature. He worked in that field in Libya and at Keyano College in Alberta before settling in Vancouver, teaching since 1991 at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. His love of words was complemented by a love of art and music, all of which enriched his life significantly. The same is true of his enduring love of cars, most recently a red Porsche that he enjoyed immensely. Bruce is survived by his cherished family, son Alec, daughter Emily, and their mother Gail, as well as his parents Blanche and Greg, brother Brian, and sisters Beverly and Brenda, their spouses Diane, Ralph and Mark, and his beloved nieces and nephews. A self-described curmudgeon, he expressed his love for them with steady, calm persistence and occasional good- natured teasing, to the benefit of everyone concerned. The seemingly endless number of Bruce's friends, from childhood and college mates to professors, colleagues and former students to goaltenders who faced his sharp-shooting skills, is testimony to his integrity, his wry wit, and his charm, all of which will be sorely missed. The family wishes to thank the caregivers who worked to make his illness bearable for him, as Bruce, with dignity and generosity of spirit intact, endeavoured to comfort those around him. A celebration of his life will be held at the University Club, University of Saskatchewan Campus, in Saskatoon on Sunday, September 1, 2013, at 1:00 p.m.

I had the pleasure of being involved in Bruce's hiring at Kwantlen. Having retired about the same time we lost touch, with my travelling. Now in 2017 as we are forming a KPU Retirees Association I discovered his passing. How sad for Bruce and his family and friends. Our hallway conversations were always interesting, humorous, droll and sometimes inspired. He proved a real benefit to Kwantlen. Roger Elmes, Dean Emeritus

I am so sorry to hear about Bruce's death. Although I had not seen him in many years, I had so many wonderful memories of the friendship that we had in High School. I am saddened immensely at the world's loss of such an incredibly talented human being. My deepest sympathies to his entire family. I will never forget him. God speed his soul to heaven.

I had the pleasure of knowing Bruce during his Kwantlen years. He was a friendly and helpful colleague, who supported my attempts to improve English students' weak writing skills.
It is now one of my regrets that I had not heard how sick he was because I would have been in touch over the past couple of years, instead of waiting for his return.
To all of you who are mourning his passing, my thoughts are with you.

Tom and I send our love and support to the whole family. I haven't seen Bruce for many years, but remember the days when we cousins enjoyed ourselves so much on visits "out west". I know he was much loved and will be missed.

Condolences to the family and friends for whom Bruce's passing represents such a great loss. I hope that the end of his long struggle will bring some peace, and that your memories will be of how he enriched the lives of everyone who knew him. This "self-described curmudgeon" left a mark on his colleagues in countless ways that will live on in how we deal with students, and we will be reminded of his steadfastness and integrity whenever we are faced with thorny questions of principle. Safe home, Bruce.

To the Raskob family,
You are in my thoughts and
prayers at this time. Although it had been many years since I had seen Bruce, his thoughtfulness when he called me in Edmonton after my sister passed away was greatly appreciated. Madeleine & I were close to Bruce in the early days and we both enjoyed his company and great sense of humour! Heaven now has another angel.
Sincerely, Marie Legare
