Dear Bill, Fern, Donald and Enola,

I was so sorry to hear from my Aunt Marion about Bruce's passing. Please accept our sincere condolences on your deep loss.

Your family was so kind to me during my summer visits with Uncle Ed. The memory than stands out most for me is the time when I was around 10 years old and Bruce was around 12 years old. He rode over to Ed's on his horse and gave me my first horse ride. I guess he thought that Donald and I needed a break from riding our dirt bikes.

We have you in our thoughts, and pray that God grants you peace at this difficult time.

First I’d like to offer my condolescences to Bruce’s family. My heart and thought are with you now.

I have have not known Bruce for very long, but he impacted my life greatly. I admired Bruce and his unique ability to run so fast and so hard. Often I looked up to him from behind as he was always in front leading the pack. I know that my goal during training runs would always be to keep up or even surpass Bruce, but it never happened. He had this unique ability to master every trail he set foot on. He was an incredible runner, an amazing person and a great friend. He was an inspiration and a true competitor. His enthusiasm, personality and skill definitely rubbed off on all of us runners!! I know that I will carry your spirit, strength and smile as I continue my endeavor to run and train. I have heard fellow runners say that they are a better person because of you, Bruce. I know that is true for me. Thank you for being part of my life! Thank you for being you! You will be missed but not forgotten.

I’d like to end with a short saying that reminds me of you...

Part of the Journey
To love and to lose is one of the biggest tragedies in life, yet one fails to see the blessing in the loss. We lose for many reasons - a death, a divorce, a broken friendship and the end of a relationship. In that moment, we feel our life has come to an end. How are we to go on? A piece of your soul is taken leaving an empty hole in your heart. The question of “why me” repeats in your mind but as the beauty of time progresses, we see the answer. Loss makes us stronger and wiser. A loss helps us to appreciate even the smallest, insignificant things in life. Our hearts become softer and full of even more love than we had to begin with. A loss helps us to see that we can’t do it alone, that we need faith and hope to get us through.
When the grieving and the healing have taken their course, we are renewed, ready to begin a new chapter in our lives with a whole new outlook and attitude. Only then are we able to appreciate the lesson learned through that loss. One never forgets those we lost, but we do learn to let go.
We learn to keep living even though we don’t want to. We learn to treasure each moment and each person. In turn, losses make our lives a lot richer.
To love and lose is a tragedy, but it’s not the end of our lives. It’s part of our journey. Thank you Bruce for my journey.

Dear Sawchuk Family:
Almost a year ago to the date of Bruce's death, I had the opportunity to meet this fine man, through my brother Dale, at the Las Vegas road race. When he arrived, he discovered that the organizers failed to register him.
Like a true sportsman, Bruce didn't complain and quickly decided to run to keep company with Dale, my other brother, sister and me. As it turned out, his time was good enough to win a medal in his age class but this was not important to Bruce - a humble warrior on this earth and now a part of Heaven's relay team. God bless your wonderful son, husband, father and member of the Saskatoon Running Club.

To the Sawchuk Family:
Please accept our deepest condolences. We were proud to have Bruce as part of our Saskatchewan Boston Marathon team. As a person Bruce achieved something many only dream of, he qualified for the Boston marathon. As a runner he achieved something even more miraculous, he qualified on his 1st try. We will miss his presence on the team but his spirit will be with us in the run.

To the Sawchuk Family,
Words cannot express how saddened I am with the passing of Bruce. I remember him being everybody's friend and such a patient person. We all spent a lot of time together growing up, but even as adults Bruce always had a big smile and lots of conversation when I would run into him. He introduced me to his children a year or two ago and you could see in his face just how proud he was to be a father. It's one thing I remember about him since high school. Everything he did, he did to the best of his ability and he always carried a quiet pride around with him. He will be truly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
