Bruce Schenk Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2023.
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Bruce Schenk announces his passing on Monday January 16, 2023 at the age of 69. Bruce passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving wife, Vicki, and his daughters Sarah-Dawn (Steve), Alissa (Pete) and Katie (Shawn). Bruce was the beloved son of Ken and Betty Schenk and much loved brother of Linda (Willie). Bruce loved and adored his seven wonderful grandchildren-Euan, Heidi, Everett, Cece, Chloe, Oscar and Millie. Family was all important to Bruce; his relationships with his wife, daughters and their families were a source of peace and joy and meant the world to him.
Growing up, Bruce was very active in his church choir and youth groups. He was a Queens Scout and he loved to travel, a passion that continued throughout his life.
Bruce's career path was multifaceted. He was a Lutheran pastor and chaplain. He served as chaplain at Brookside Youth Detention Centre in Cobourg, where he introduced restorative justice into the institution. From there, in the early 2000's, Bruce served as the Lead of the Ontario Government's team for implementing the restorative justice provisions of Canada's new Youth Criminal Justice Act. Bruce also developed an innovative practice that was unique in the field of restor- ative justice: the "Hosting", a faith community offers its facility and volunteers to "host" the restorative justice events that take place in their neighbourhoods.
In 2007, Bruce worked closely with Shalem's FaithCare (Faith Communities Affirming Restor- ative Practices) program. Bruce developed the FaithCare training and FaithCare has worked with over 100 churches from 10 denominations all across Canada and trained hundreds of people in Canada and the United States. FaithCare works to support faith communities to strengthen and enhance relations, and to repair harm when these relationships in the church setting become broken. Bruce remained active in FaithCare until his very last days.
In 2008, Bruce became founding Director of the Canadian International Insti- tute for Restorative Practices (IIRP-Canada). Bruce taught and truly believed that Restorative Practice is not just a program but a way of thinking and being-a framework on understanding of what it is to be human-where the focus is not an adversarial process but on creating a safe space for real conversations that deepen relationships and build stronger, more connected communities. From this he became a leading figure in the growth of restorative practices in Public, Catholic and Christian school boards across Canada. Bruce retired in July 2020 and IIRP-Canada continues to remain a vibrant service.
Cremation has taken place and the family welcomes everyone to attend funeral services to be held at St. Luke's Church, 566 Armour Road in Peterbourgh, ON Saturday, February 4, 2023 beginning at 1:00 p.m., with reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Palliative Suite at Northumberland Hills Hospital or to a local school's Breakfast Program.

I have not seen or spoken to Bruce in many years unfortunately, and just learned of his passing today. Bruce saved my life in ways that I will not explain in detail here. As a very troubled youth I found myself serving a sentence in BYC. It was Bruce who helped in ways that was needed and necessary in order for me to move forward with living life. He was one of the reasons I became a social worker after my release and am the man I am today. Bruce was with me when I went back to BYC as a volunteer for the Seven steps program.
I am so very sorry for your loss and he truly was and is a great man.

Dear Vikki and your family. I was introduced to restorative justice in 1996 when Terry O´ Connell visited the UK - it changed my life and through the IIRP I was so fortunate to have been able to meet and get to know Bruce. A truly gentle man with a great sense of humour (especially when he and Terry got together). He made such a difference to this world and to so many people´s lives. Sending love and gratitude

Dear Vicky and family,
I am so sorry for your loss and I was so saddened to hear of his passing. I first met Bruce on one of his visits to BC when he trained me and so many others in FaithCARE and this past summer I was privileged to be trained by Bruce to train others in FaithCARE. His work in the area of FaithCARE has been a great gift to the church. He will be remembered as kind and thoughtful and for his dedication to being restorative in and through all of his life. May God's peace and comfort be with you in the days, weeks and months ahead.

To dear Vicki and all family, I ask that that God's healing power be with you now and for all your earthly days. Bruce was a wonderfully dedicated man and made changes wherever he went. Our careers touched paths at Brookside in Cobourg many years ago. Bless you all...I have just lost my amazing mother and know the pain you are in. He was taken so young for reasons we cannot fathom.

I along with several other leaders of the Christian Reformed Church were trained this past summer by Bruce and his colleague Anne to be trainers of restorative practices. We cherished the time we had with Bruce as he lived out the practice domains with us with both high levels of expectations, yet in a gentle and supportive spirit. His generous heart was evident to all of us. We extend our deep sympathy to his his close friends and especially his family and wife Vicky.

Bruce was a man of wisdom, love, humour & patience. He became more a brother than brother-in-law to Vicki´s siblings & a treasured uncle. We all valued Bruce´s perspective on life. Bruce will always have a presence in our lives. May your cherished memories help sustain you all through your grief.
