I am so sorry to hear of Bruce's passing and our sincere condolences to the whole family. Also, Jan, we will never forget all your kindness to us in the hospital in August 1985 when our Father had suffered his stroke. For 11 days until he passed, you were an absolute Angel. I'm sure your same tenderness and care supports your Family during this difficult time.

My deep condolences to Bruce's family. I had the pleasure of working with Bruce when he was the principal of BCCHS. I experienced his 110% dedication to BCC through his every action, every decision, and every interaction with anyone within the school community and outside of the school. He was the face of the high school. I heard it said he bled blue and gold. More than all this, his sincere and honest interaction with everyone was an example for all. His legacy will be felt for many years. Battle Creek and the educational community lost a great man with the passing of Mr. Barney.

I am saddened to read of the passing of Mr. Barney.
He was my teacher, coach and a positive role model for me as a young man and in life.
From 7th grade at NW through 12th grade at BCCHS I believe I was in one of his classes or on the field or in the pool every year with him.
I remember how enthusiastic and passionate he was when he taught us history. I think he is why I'm a history buff today.
I'll always remember Mr. Barney as a man who presented a tough exterior but underneath that exterior was a fair man with a good heart.
Put it this way. My children have heard of Mr. Barney.
My deepest condolences to the family on your loss.
Tis was a life well lived.

Mr. Barney my friend, my teacher, my football coach, and my mentor. I first met Mr. Barney when I was in the 7th grade at Northwestern Jr. High School. It was his first year teaching and my first year attending. He was teaching Language Skills. I would always walk across the big field from Dudley school where my Mom was a teacher and get to Northwestern early. He would see me and come to the door and let me sit in his class room and talk with me and joke with me while he was getting ready for his daily classes. He did this every morning if I chose to come in. Which was just about every morning. Mr Barney was my football coach my entire football career as a Northwestern Viking and as a Battle Creek Central Bearcat. Even then as a first year teacher at Northwestern Jr. High he was teaching us about someday becoming a Battle Creek Central Bearcat The Pride of the State. We as students or football players at Northwestern were being primed for excellence even before we attended Battle Creek Central High School. And of course once we got to BCCHS even though we all came from different Junior High Schools, we were all expected to work together and uphold the privilege and the tradition of excellence of being a Battle Ceek Central Beacat. Mrs. Barney thank you for sharing and inspiring such a wonderful friend, teacher, football coach and mentor. He taught me that I could do more than I thought I could and that I was to never give up in my life pursuits. My deepest and sincere condolences to you Mrs. Barney and all the rest of the family.

Mr. Barney was the best principal we ever had at central high school. Some students may have gotten in trouble at school and seemed frustrated but he knew what words to say to calm somebody down and send them back to class. He would not only watch us doing fun activities at school, he would join in on the fun. He made us laugh in ways that nobody else could in the school. He would sit in our classroom and pretend to be a student and act like he didnt know the answer to a problem. We would make jokes and he would always have a comeback. We was all sad to see him retire and go, but he could never stay away from us to long. He would come and visit us from time to time. Our faces always lit up when we see him walking through the building. He was a legend and nobody could ever replace him. We love and miss u.

My memories of Bruce are a piece of the past for me. He was a kind devoted HS boyfriend from sitting at the Sip'N Nip drivein '62 (w/his Mom driving) & then later in his own red Chevy convertible ~~ to riding to the Senior Prom '66 in his Dad's black T-Bird one. Reading other's comments, I can only be proud of the man, educator, & father that he became. Good job BZ! Blessings to Jan & the family.

We knew Bruce in his later years as our FL neighbor here in The Villages. He and Jan worked tirelessly in their yard and when we passed, Bruce was always ready with a hello. Along with the hello, came a story or two about his grandkids or about his Rolverines. With a sparkle in his eyes highlighting his pride Bruce would bring a grandchild or two for us to meet. Kids were as classy as Bruce claimed! For a couple of years, Bruce & Jan played golf with our neighborhood group - he was such a good sport. We're fortunate to have had Bruce in our lives! RIP Sharon & Don Mcginnis

My deepest condolences to the Barney Family on your loss of such a terrific Man! He was not only a true Bearcat but he encouraged all of us Bearcats to reach for the Stars! I Remember having him as a teacher for Skills for Success and he talking to me about Leo Buscagalia! I had the pleasure of going to a program with Leo Buscagalia and it helped to change my life and my ability to be successful too not just in life, but in my jobs too. I remember Mr. Barney would talk about his families tavern on West Michigan that he wished that he could purchase back and bring it back to its old glory again. I drive by it when I go to appointments and think of that story often and have shared it with my children.
Mr. Barney you've left an impression on many students who love you and will dearly miss you!!!
Thank You Mrs Barney and children for sharing this amazing Man with me as a Bearcat Student!!

Mr Barney will always be one of the greatest men I've ever met. Our time together as high school administrators were a highlight of my career. He was always very supportive of the staff and students. He demonstrated his leadership by being present every day. He loved his family, his school, and his community overall. Mr Barney was forever faithful to the profession and I am truly grateful God has allowed us to cross paths along the way. Many blessings to the family going forward. You have much to be proud of in this wonderful human being. May the Lord's comfort keep you!

Yes, he defined what it was to be a Bearcat, so the title "Mr. Bearcat" was truly fitting. As I see it, there should/will never be another "Mr. Bearcat" if retiring a name is possible, I certainly think this would be the time. We all know that Mr. Barney was so much more, plain and simple he was a beloved human being, the best of humanity, kind, caring, thoughtful, selfless, generous with his time, talents and treasures, a listener, planner, visionary, and the list goes on. As a child, I knew him as a colleague of my mother, Izora Ward (librarian at WK Kellogg Jr. High), then as my teacher for Skills for Success, then after I graduated as one of the best tour guides for the Battle Creek Central High School Alumni Association, then in my non-profit career as the first board chair and founding member for the Battle Creek Public Schools Education Foundation which now sits at over 3 million in assets, it was so good to see him and Jan at our Bearcat Tailgate Fundraiser in 2019 just before COVID shut down our 2020 celebration. The journey with Mr. Barney has been such a blessing in my life and for that I say thank you and RIH Mr. Barney. Lynn Ward Gray, Class of 1981 & Samuel Gray, Class of 1978

I've known Bruce for just about my entire life. My dad had him as a student at Northwestern Junior High School. I had the good fortune of having Bruce as a teacher in 8th grade at Northwestern and then again in 10th grade while at Battle Creek Central.
Bruce was just a nice guy. He was someone I always enjoyed visiting with over the years when our paths would cross at a BCCHS football game, in church, or at a Michigan football game.
The entire Angood family including my mom Judy, my brother David and myself have your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Dad B was the best person I have ever known in my life. He cared so much about the Battle Creek community, especially the high school that he attended and was Principal at for so many years.
On a personal note, he always treated me like his own son and always supported Erin and I during our life together. We did so many fun things together and I always knew I could confide in him. He was such a wonderful grandfather to Olivia and Avery.
I will miss him every day and will always use the leadership & family first skills I learned from him over the last 20+ years.
Love you Dad B!

Mr. Barney was my teacher at BCCHS in the late 70's. I can still see him standing outside his class room door, arms folded on his chest and the biggest smile on his face. I knew Mr Barney as first a Civics teacher when I was in high school, then as my principal, again when I was in high school. Later Mr Barney ( I could never ever call him Bruce) was my boss when I taught at BCCHS. He was and is and always will be, what it means to be a Bearcat! He signifies what it means to truly be a Bearcat and what Bearcat pride is all about. I am a better person and teacher because I had the blessing to work with him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, he will truly be missed!

I have had the privilege of visiting with Mr. Barney these past few months when I visit my mom. He was still smiling, waving and making his ever-connecting eye contact to demonstrate he saw me. I saw him, too, in the present and in his past. I could share my memories with him as my high school history teacher and the young father of whose months-old daughter, Erin, I babysat during the summer. I miss being greeted by his smile and wave when I visit my mom. Mr. Barney's encouragement of so many people over the years goes beyond words. My prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
