Bryan Casey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 6 to Apr. 7, 2011.
CASEY, Bryan M. B.Eng, Ch.Eng, Eur.Ing, CIBSE, FEANI, PM FAMILY HISTORY IRELAND EDUCATION HUMOUR SPORTS A short list for what shaped the gentle giant we all know as Bryan Casey. Having grown up as an 'Irish quadruplet' in World's End and Chelsea (London), UK and Australia, Bryan had a razor-sharp wit dwarfed only by his immense intelligence and a keen, analytical eye. Stolen from us in a tragic car accident in Arnprior, Ontario, Bryan had an uncanny ability to weave together the old world with the new. Ever grateful to his parents for putting four children through university in the 80s, he continued his pursuit of knowledge - his value for higher education instilled in his children. His Engineering career took him from Damascus Gate to Dublin, Ghana to New York, Brussels to Brockville and Adelaide to Ottawa. At every stop, he was welcomed by Irish smiles and a telly high in the corner with a live feed of the match of the day, be it rugby, cricket, hurley or football. Whether it was London Irish or Ottawa Irish, his stature ensured he could never get lost. It was only natural he pursued coaching and refereeing to 'stay in the game.' Having never seen ice until he arrived in Canada, Bryan adopted a new sport he referred to as "ice hockey." Realizing he was unable to move faster on skates than he could on the rugby field, he took up all other things Canadian: alpine and Nordic skiing, sailing, and winter triathlons. We knew he'd never leave when he purchased his first fishing license. Incapable of missing an Ireland rugby game or Chelsea FC match, he followed his teams on a smartphone - whether rinkside or along the sidelines during his childrens sporting events. Predeceased by his mother Elizabeth Hickey Casey, Bryan leaves behind his wife LeeEllen Carroll, their three young children Gabriel, Regan and Muiredach Casey, his father William "Gus" Casey, brothers Anthony and Brendan Casey, and sister Annette Lace. Donations in the name of "LeeEllen Carroll in trust for the Casey children" can be made at the Bank of Montreal. A fund is being set up for Bryan's and LeeEllen's children. A wake will be held Friday, April 08, 2011 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm at Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Road, Westboro, Ottawa. Funeral services to follow Saturday, April 09, 2011 at 11am at St. Augustine Parish, 1060 Baseline Road, Ottawa, Ontario. All are welcome. 1960 - 2011 R.I.P. Shandy Paddy

All the lads at London Irish looked up to Bryan - we had to, he was bigger than us! It's unfathomable he's been taken from us, that we'll not hear his belly laugh again or bathe in the glow of his warm wit. It was grand to share the good times with you and to know that when you left us in London, you'd gone off to make a wonderful family with your beloved LeeEllen. We'll miss you big feller.

LeeEllen and your children: Gabriel, Regan & Murdoch

Rather than express how we feel at this time , we wanted to send you the thoughts of these two quotes which, we think, will help you more. Bryan lived a short but happy and successful life and that is what will see your family into the future.

Say not in grief: "He is no more",
but live in thankfulness that he was.

Success

To laugh often and love much;
to win the respect of intelligent persons
and the affection of children;
to earn the approbation of honest critics
and to endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty;
to find the best in others;
to give of one's self;
to leave the world a little better,
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
to have played and laughed with enthusiasm
and sung with exultation;
to know that even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived -
this is to have succeeded.

We are so sorry to hear about your loss.
Bryan was such a dedicated father and husband and loved you all very much. He always had such a great perspective about whatever soccer game we were watching at the time. We remember him sitting under a tree, relaxing and enjoying watching one of his children play soccer.
We are thinking of you at this time.

LeeEllen, Our thoughts are with you from afar. I know your strength will carry Gabriel, Regan, and Muiredach through this difficult time, they are fortunate to have you as their mother. I saw Bryan just before I left Ottawa, it was such a typical moment with Bryan as we shared a few quips, a bit of thoughtful commentary about his time in Ghana and our move to Kenya, and then a couple of Canuck and Irish jibes - and naturally, it was outside of a rink where we bumped into each other. As we think of you and the kids our memories of Bryan will always be happy ones.

We had the pleasure to work with Bryan for five good years. His quick witted comments and bantering provided welcome relief during stressful situations and his brilliance helped us overcome some extraordinary project challenges with the Victoria Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Regent Park Phase One of the Toronto Revitalization Project, Queen's University Jock Harty Arena, and the Phillips Cable Plant Remediation and Demolition project in Brockville. Bryan was our Project Manager on each of these major projects, and his influence and involvement ensured a successful outcome each time. Bryan also played a pivotal role in helping our our firm meet LEED requirement for Green Projects.

A loyal Irishman and devoted family man, we enjoyed Bryan's eloquence as he would tell us about his new love of "ice hockey" and watching his son playing the Canadian Game. He was a genuine and caring person who will be missed by all whose lives he touched. His smile is gone but his memory remains.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife LeeEllen, and their family during these most difficult times.

We'll always keep "Big Bryan Casey" in our hearts and thoughts.

God Bless you Bryan
Heaven will be a lot more special with you there
