Bud Smith Obituary

Published by Austin American-Statesman on Jul. 17, 2020.
SMITH, Bud Lifelong resident of Austin TX (Southside, of course), passed away this May. Bud was 63 and we can celebrate a life well lived. Of the many things he loved Travel - Bud loved to hit the road and catch a concert or game. He knew a bartender in every big city. Music - If you ever called Bud, you know the first thing he would have to do was turn down the music. In a new place, he could always find that special radio station that played the songs you could not hear anywhere else. His vinyl and poster collections are legendary. Good Food Buddy was a great cook. He should have opened a food truck called "Budisms". The Ladies He loved and respected women and they loved him right back. Betting on the Games Bud loved to put a bet down on his beloved Miami "Fins" or any other team, if he could get the spread he wanted. His Harley Sunday afternoon.. slow and easy. It's too damn hot to hurry. Marfa The self-proclaimed mayor, he had a home away from Austin there. If you were lucky enough to know him, you have a "Bud" story to tell. Today is that day to share your story with a friend. Happy Birthday, brother.

It´s your birthday time. We had a joke every year since we were 14 that you were older ( just by 2 1/2 months). Now I am the oldster! Miss you Bud!

We have been neighbors of Bud's for as long as we can remember. Once Bud retired, Joseph and Bud became pals since Joseph worked from home. He would take Bud to and pick up from the airport at all hours of the day and night for his various excursions!! We could knock on each other's door "we even had a secret knock" for help with this or that. We would meet on the sidewalk or driveway and chat about anything from real estate & stock market (Sue) or cars & motorcycles (Joseph), etc.
We will cherish these conversations forever.
Bud was a funny guy!!! He made us laugh!!! We miss our Bud!!!

Bud helped make our family business a REAL business and then became part of our family! We will always say, there is no Newcastle Homes without BUD!

Far from a co-worker, Bud worked his way up to being a partner/co-owner, and FAR more importantly, a friend and brother!

We remember clients calling Bud the Wolf, a la Pulp Fiction, because if there was a problem, Bud solved it--FAST!

We remember a slim year when starting out when we handed Bud his holiday bonus, he gave it back and said to put it towards the next gig so our next year would be better.

We remember him bringing Judy NY style bagels on her birthday every year.

We remember him getting to know all our co-workers and clipping funny comics out he knew they would enjoy.

We remember Bud being the toughest and nicest guy all at the same time. We miss Bud and it is still impossible to picture our family, our business, our lives and even this world without him! There are literally scores of beautiful homes and happy young families all over urban Austin that go to sleep every night and raise their kiddos in homes BUILT BY BUD--his legacy is tangible!

RIP, Bud--you are are dearly missed and will never be forgotten! When the Buc-O's win the World Series, we KNOW you will take a celebratory ride on your Harley with a HUGE grin!

I haven"t seen Bud since the late 80 " s roofing days. " 12 squares a day " he would say. (36 bundles ). It " s funny how a song can take you back to a moment in time .Jay Brock and I went to see Bud one day and he was playing " My Town " by Iris Dement. This was when I met Bud and he was surprised that I knew the song and the artist . I" he heard it a few times since by way of station surfing and I always think of Bud . I was saddened when I saw him in the paper this morning. I wish our paths would have crossed again .R.I.P. My friend .
