Buddy York

Joseph York, known to all as "Buddy", age 87, passed away peacefully at his home on January 7, 2024. Born May 19, 1936 in Pittsburgh, PA, he graduated from Northwestern University in 1958. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for 6 years.

Early in his career, Buddy ran York Furniture in Carnegie, PA, and then worked for the Singer Corporation. After several years in the steel business, he ended his career working for several developers selling new home construction in Florida.

He was a devoted husband, an engaging and supportive father, and a doting grandfather and great grandfather. He loved family activities and events and enjoyed the simple pleasures of hanging out at the beach. He and his wife traveled throughout the US, Europe and Southeast Asia. He loved dining out and was always looking ahead to his next great meal! An avid sports fan even in his later days, he loved the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a great friend to many, known for an easy going, light hearted, gregarious personality. He was never afraid to show his emotions for both happy and sad occasions.

Buddy found great satisfaction in being a Rotary Club member, a mentor to a middle school student and a regular blood donor. He swam daily after he retired until he was no longer able to.

He was predeceased by his father Edgar York, mother Dorothy Berman York, and brother Robert York and is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce Hurwitz York, son Jeffrey York (Gail MacRae), daughter Julie Johnson (Keith), son Kenneth York, by his grandchildren Dr. Kelsey Bixler (Brandon), Spencer Poling (Emily Russell) , Colby Poling (Dr. Steve Darley), Jacob York, Katherine York and Sam York and by his great grandchildren Jackson and Emma Bixler.

A memorial service will be held at the Oviedo Woman's Club at 414 King Street, Oviedo, FL at 2 PM on Friday, February 2.
