In addition to his 2 books, my wife & I took the "New Parents As Teachers" class with Dr. White that the books both mention. NPAT was with 9 other first time parents (so the parents wouldn´t have to break bad habits) of nearly identically aged newborns (so the babies were in the same phase). We met at Dr. White´s home monthly, and Dr. White instructed us on what was coming and what to buy {and not buy). He would come to our home monthly with a grad student to observe and make suggestions. Results: 35 years later all 5 of my kids graduated from the top Magnet School with 49 other brilliant students in a university city of more than 300,000. First child is a Pediatric Cardiologist with 18 published journal articles from THE top program. Second is a Mechanical Engineer with Master's & 2 patents, Third is an Electrical Engineering grad with1 paper, 2 patents, and 2 promotions in 3 years, Fourth and Fifth (twins) are getting Masters in Engineering.
The principles from the class are the same as in the book.
Best toys:
Unbreakable mirror where the image continually changes, keeping the baby´s attention.
Beach ball.
My phone number is 859-699-6666 if you want to call me and talk about Dr. White´s work. I feel that strongly about it

I am the parent of a child born in 1975 who read the 1975 edition of this book and followed its recommendations. In elementary school, the child scored in the 99%tile on the California Standardized Achievement Test and went on to earn a STEM Ph.D. at UC Davis and is now teaching at a university.

White marries years of research at Harvard's child development center, My son's IQ is 147, and I raised him by this incredible book. Reading level: Meaty and scientific, intellectually demanding, but worth it!

I had this book by my bedside for ten years as I raised my three children. My oldest son is in medical school, my second not far behind, and my third is keeping up with her two brothers. If anyone ever asks me my secret, this book is part of my answer.
So, Dr. White's work lives on beyond his passing, however sorrowful that passing was. My very late condolences to his family.

I first heard Dr White interviewed on radio when I was an expectant first-time father, in 1995. I immediately bought his book. At one point, as young parents, we reached out to Dr White via email and were surprised to receive a prompt, helpful response. We adhered to his guidance in raising both our children. Sadly, I came across Dr White's obituary while looking for a copy of Dr White's book for our son and his wife, who have their own son now. I never felt like I was able to properly thank Dr White for providing the closest thing there was to a baby owner's manual, so wanted to do that here. RIP Dr White. You made life easier for untold numbers of parents and their children.

Dear family of Burton White,
I am currently reading my second Burton White book, "How to Raise an Unspoiled Child", because I am a new father. I am so grateful that Dr. White devoted his life to such an important, yet formerly neglected, aspect of life. I want to thank his family for supporting him, in-order to allow him to contribute his incredibly accurate and helpful advice to mankind. Other than my own family, no other person will influence my children as much as Burton White will. Thank you, Burton and family.

This wonderful person is the reason I have two terrific, kind well adjusted adult children 39/ 34. I would have been adrift without his calm sensible approach.
He also gave me strength when so many said to my face I was hurting my children by being a stay at home mom .
I am now caring for my grandson during the workday since his first month and still applying Dr White´s advice. Thank you to his family for sharing him and allowing him to do such valuable work. I hadn´t realized he passed and I extend sincere condolences.

Dear family and friends of Burton,
My wife and I were very sad to learn of Buton's death, just this moment. All who were/are close to Burton, please accept our deep condolences.
My wife and I imagine Burton was a lovely husband, a great father, a lovely person. We read both his books, and my wife and I have recommended them to the great many (perhaps 100 or more people, often total strangers) who compliment us on our children, these past 21 years. Many thanks to Burton.
Yours Sincerely,
Brian and Helen

Thank you for being such a solid rock and sharing your beliefs with us, when it was not so popular to stay home and be a Mom. I enjoyed hearing about you through Elisabeth Elliot's program, Gateway to Joy. Family, you are blessed to have such a Dad as your dad! God bless you all- and may more and more new parents run to his books-

I spent two wonderful years living on the third floor of Bud and Jackie's house in the 60's. i loved them both as well as their wonderful little ones whom I often baby sat. I truly felt like a member of the family.
Bud was one of the finest people I have ever known. I think of him often and will continue to miss him.
Go with God, my very dear friend.

My deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. White. While I never met Dr. White, I feel like I knew him through reading The First Three Years. It was amazingly helpful in raising my daughter (now 8). I loved the personal asides. Having an infant was a tough challenge for me and Dr. White and his book helped me so much. His graciousness and kindness came through in his written words and also in his voice the one time I spoke with him on the phone. In a fit of desperation when faces with sleep training, I googled Dr. White, called him and spoke with him. That interaction was incredibly helpful for me and incredibly nice of Dr. White. I can only imagine the impact he had on his family and friends. God Bless and God Speed Dr. White.

So sad to hear of Dr. White's passing. I was the Phase 7 child featured in The First Three Years television production back in 1977, and fondly remember Dr. White and his crew visiting my home as a child. Best wishes and prayers to his entire family.

Danny & Laura, The way you are both amazing spouses and parents is the best legacy of your father, a man who dedicated his life studying the optimal well-being of children. I hope that you and your siblings can find comfort knowing that his love and his life's work live on through you and your own children. He was such a warm, loving and patient man. We wish you peace, The Underhills

Bud and Janet White were a great source of wisdom on parenthood after the birth of our first child, Jake. Long after both my children were toddlers, I loved running into Bud in Newton and talking about his beloved Grand Case in St. Martin. He'll be missed by many parents in the MeteoWest region.
