Our deepest sympathy to the Bentley family. Dr. Bentley was the Dean of Agriculture when I was an undergraduate student. I appreciate his training in public speaking and in soil science. Dr. Bentley had compassion for struggling family farms. Treasure his thoughts and memories.

Thanks & Condolences to Family & Friends of Fred Bentley
My condolences go out to Fred's family, who I hope will feel welcome to look me up if any of you are ever visiting the Blue Mountains in Australia, where I moved to from McGill/Montreal in 1995.
Thank you Fred, for your caring vision, willingness to challenge the unsustainable and nonsensical; and for working on multiple fronts persistently for the well-being of all systems.
I remember many precious times with Fred, the following two in particular.
At a conference on Sustainable Agriculture in Egypt we both spoke our 'truths' in the face of resistance; and reflecting recently on this experience we still knew we were 'right'! The trip up the Nile afterwards with Fred and Helen was also memorable, especially having fun and nurturing our shared fascination with the history of other cultures.
More recently, I had the privilege of delivering the last 'Bentley Lecture' that Fred was able to attend (courageously getting up from his hospital bed to do so). I was also special for me to see Fred there surrounded by his family and friends. I will forever treasure the memory of seeing Fred's impish smile or nod of approval, when I said something that struck a cord; and also our deeply caring conversations after the talk and at the celebratory dinner in the evening.
From a fellow lover of soil, and all of life, and an admirer and honoured friend of Fred, I say THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Collegial and caring hugs, Stuart

Our deepest sympathy to the family. Dr. Bentley was the Dean of Agriculture when I joined the staff in 1962. He was a very accomplished educator and always showed concern for humanity and the feeding of the world's expanding population. I valued his advise and friendship. He will be sorely missed. We are sorry that we cannot attend the memorial service because of prior commitments.

Dr. Bentley was an approachable Dean, a good educator in Public Speaking and Soil Science, and a supportive counselor.
I admired his accomplishments in Agriculture and humanity, contacted him for advice, and valued his friendship.
Please accept my most heartfelt condolences on the loss of this fine human being.

My sympathies to the Bentley family. My memories of Dr. Bentley include his university lectures on: family planning -- only two kids!; gray-wooded soils; and ICRISAT in Hyderabad, India. I visited Hyderabad in 1982 after the 12th ISSS congress in New Delhi. I also saw the classic movie Pakeezah before the congress. Thanks for the memories Dr. Bentley.

Dr. C.F.Bentley was one of the speakers invited to my U of A class in the 1970's. Then and subsequently, I learned how much he had done and was doing to promote sustainable agriculture here and abroad. He earned my sincere admiration and respect. My heartfelt condolences to the whole family.
