C. John Small

I will always remember John's kind sense of humour and his wisdom about so many things. I especially remember fondly his response to "I'm fine thanks" when he was offering food or beverage to me as a guest: "I know you're fine but would you like to have some"... This was just but one indication of his wonderful generous spirit! My prayers are with his family and all of us who will miss his fine, true and faithful humanity.

John made an indelible impact on me as an 11 year-old when our family arrived in Paris on our return trip home to Canada, and you both welcomed us into your home. You and John were so kind and hospitable. John made breakfast the following morning and had us wide-eyed with appreciation and awe. He simply impressed the socks off of us as he flipped pancakes that did double turns up to the ceiling and neatly landed back in the pan. We figured that it was hardly surprising that he was an important Canadian diplomat: how else might he have such talent?

John had such a wonderful ability to make everyone around him feel so important, and years later when we reconnected at my parent's cottage his graciousness and warmth were still a central part of who he was.

He will be greatly missed and we send our deepest sympathy.

My sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Small. I first met the Smalls in "Peking" in 1976 and always found Mr. Small to be an honourable and true gentleman. Although it is many years since last meeting, my memories of him at the helm of the Canadian Embassy in Peking remain strong.

It is with deep sorrow that I learned of the passing of my Uncle John.He was a remarkable man and was much loved by my mother,Mary and late father,Oliver.The many stories of his experiences in the many countries he served in while working with Canadian Government were interesting and captivating to my sisters and myself.He will be greatly missed. On behalf of my sisters,Kit and Lesley, and mother Mary, I wish to extend our deepest sympathies to our cousins,Chris,Margaret,Cathy and Trish, and of course to our dear Aunt Jean. Our prayers are with you all at this time of sorrow.

I would like to offer my condoleances to the family of Mr Small. I wrote him in 1995 about relations between Canada and China during my studies and he had the kindness to answer me.
