I still think of you often, Searle. Your kindness to me was exceptional and life-changing in very positive ways. He was so patient and kind and generous.

I lived upstairs from Searle and Harry in the 90s . our kids played together and we had great conversations about lots of things yet he kept a level of mystery about himself that was very charming.I was from the Boston area and my dad got his PHD at harvard and is an archaeologist and professor. I loved watching Searle teach Harry music electronics and just how to have fun. he was patient kind and a good friend . so sad to hear of his passing .

I have been following Searle's work with the IPS online for years. I often wanted to get in touch with him to thank him for his extraordinary kindness to me when I was young. Searle taught me a lot about music and literature and his philosophy. I read books he recommended and listened to music he liked and was fundamentally educated to become a better person and a better student. He was kind and open and always smiled when he was sardonic. He helped me immeasurably. I was so pleased that he went on to do such great work and very devastated to read of his death. No matter how obnoxious I may have been, he was always a benevolent and inspiring presence with his lumberjacket fashion statement and his seemingly bottomless font of knowledge of the humanities and much else. He was kind and patient in an often baffling world. What a measure of a man's merit to offer so much when he could expect nothing in return.

Searle,2 weeks older, same parties, school, clubs.Old Westbury ; skip 50 years, a reunion and visit with Blaine WhiteTaveras in Portugal. He was an enigma. I actually never knew him in our 70 years of life . A complete mystery. Not to be solved.L. Bostwick

I remember Searle from when he attended the NTCMA Festival in LeMars, Iowa for an award. I met him and his lovely lady friend, Laura, such wonderful people. May God bless all his family and friends. I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm so sad to hear of Searle's passing. Whenever I explain the subtle cultural difference between Seattle and Northern California, I always recount the story of when I met Searle. I went to a jam, I was new. He said after the jam "Hi, come to my party this weekend". I had a blast and met many new Old Time musicians who I'm still friends with. Even from just a brief encounter I could tell he was a kind spirit.

I only knew the music side of Searle, and his gentle nature. I never knew he had so many other accomplishments! I will keep him in my memory, and when I think of him, it will always be of him playing his fiddle, with a big grin on his face. So sorry that I wasn't able to attend the memorial. Rest in peace, dear Searle.

We only knew Searle through his love of music and his love of Laura. He excelled at both. Rest in peace friend.

I read this with great sadness.
Searle was my husband many years ago.
We met and married in New Haven and moved to Boston together.

We had some incredible times in the 5 years we were together back-packing and traveling cross country.

Searle, I always hear your voice in my head when I'm thinking of gospel songs. You were such a great singing partner to so many of us.... Thank you for all you gave to the world, and all you continue to give.

It was good to gather and sing with all of you in Searle's memory today, to hear the fullness of his life and loves. Thank you.
