Carl Brandt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 11 to Mar. 12, 2023.
Brandt, Carl 12/2/1942 - 3/8/2023 Carl Patterson Brandt died peacefully surrounded by family on March 8th, 2023. He was born on December 2nd, 1942 as the second of four children to the late Irving and Margaret Brandt in Royal Oak Michigan. Carl was a standout vocalist and Varsity tennis player at Royal Oak Dondero High School, where he won several awards. He graduated from Hope College in 1964, where, with a dazzling personality and clever jokes, he convinced Jeananne Elgersma to marry him in 1965. Shortly after, the couple moved to Ann Arbor and Jean supported them while Carl attended the University of Michigan Medical School, finishing in 1969. Carl excelled in medicine, and Jean's investment paid excellent dividends. Adored by his patients, Carl was revered as a talented obstetrician and surgeon by his peers, delivering babies in Grand Rapids, Michigan for over 30 years. After completing his four year residency at Butterworth hospital in 1973, he joined the staff and chaired both the professional standards committee and the OB/Gyn department from 1986-1990. Carl mentored and taught countless new OBGYNs throughout his career. Eventually, Carl practiced long enough to deliver the babies of babies he delivered. Preceded in death by his wife Jeananne in 2011, and granddaughter Hannah, Carl found love again and remarried in 2013 to Geri Schwab. Geri and Carl lived happily in Naples, Florida for over a decade enjoying the sun, fine dining, and relaxing on the lanai. Carl loved fishing in the back water of the "inner-costal" with his friends and family, but was as happy fishing in the lake behind his home. Carl also loved his Sudoku puzzles, battling alligators on the golf course, and sipping the finest wine a box has to offer. Carl is survived by his second wife Geri Schwab Brandt, his children and grandchildren: Martha Brandt, children Spencer, Madison; Chris (Laura) Brandt, children Noah and Isaac; Joel (Sarah) Brandt, children Grace, Katherine and Charles; and Robert (Gwen) Brandt, daughter Samantha. Carl's sisters Kathleen (Andy) Morrow, Sarah (Dan) Tracy, and Martha (Jeff) Pollock, and 15 nieces and nephews. Also survived by the children from his marriage to Geri: Scott Robelen, child Cass, Tammy Robelen, daughters Michelle and Samantha, G.L. (Allison) Schwab, children Quinn and Carrington, and Craig (Andrea) Schwab, children Riley and Griffin. As a devout Christian, father, grandfather, physician, and friend, Carl improved thousands of lives. The Brandt home was the epicenter where all were welcome and treated as family. He demonstrated both his fiercely sarcastic wit and extremely strong work ethic throughout his entire life. His humor and personality proudly reverberates in his offspring to this day. Carl was the consummate role model of a father and friend. He enriched countless lives by selflessly giving to charity and through his mission work. He also tortured many lives by always putting onions and celery in his tuna-fish sandwiches. He took great delight in irritating his children by mispronouncing "schnorkeling," "lazhure beams," and measuring things in "sonimeters." Carl had a passion for family, travel, golf, wine, blackjack, tennis, and fishing. Carl loved being on the water trolling for salmon. He fished in Lake Michigan, the ocean, Drummond Island, and anywhere he thought fish might be hiding. While fishing he caught over 10,000 salmon, at least that is what he told his children, and that was just on his last trip alone. Carl lived a life of class, grace, and sacrifice and leaves a legacy many people would hope to emulate. His love for others showed throughout his life of giving. A life well lived, he epitomized love, caring, hard work, wit, and kindness. Carl often stated to the ones he loved, "with me I can promise one thing, you will never be bored" and he was right! Two memorial services will be held: March 27th in Grand Rapids Michigan: 1 PM Service at 3rd Reformed Church and 4-6 PM Visitation and Reception at Watermark Country Club April 11th Naples Florida: 3-5 PM Service at Naples Funeral Home, Davis Blvd, Florida and 5:30-7:30 PM Reception at the Players Club, Lely To share a memory or photo, or to sign his guestbook, visit www.heritagelifestory.com

I happened to see an "In Memory" gift notification for Dr. Brandt in the Meijer Gardens magazine, Seasons. Dr. Brandt was my OB/GYN doc during my 20´s, 30´s, 40´s, etc. until he retired. He delivered both my children and listened honestly and compassionately to my needs and wants throughout the decades I saw him. I will never forget him! He was loved by his patients as well as his family and friends.

I am sorry I am just realizing that dear Dr Brandt passed away !!

After loosing a baby and having a doctor that was not compassionate nor a Christian my girlfriend referred me to Dr Brandt
Upon meeting him the first time I felt so much relief grace and sincere concern and love for what I had gone through
dr Brandt delivered or arrived shortly after all my children were born and cared for me with other health issues later in my life. What an incredible man! I always felt his deep love for his wife, the way he spoke of her and then his deep pride of his children What a genuine man of God , who blessed so many with his gifts, sincere concern and example of a husband and father

So very sorry for your huge loss yet grateful with you for his life
He was a gem

Dr. Brandt was a trooper for agreeing to forgo his usual Friday deliveries to accomodate the delivery of our daughter on a Saturday instead...just so we could have our little "Valentine" born on Valentine's Day.
His caring demeanor, his easy personality, his medical expertise, and his strong integrity were evidence of his Christian beliefs and standards.
My heart goes out to his family, and may God bestow His comfort upon them.

He will always be a part of our family lore. When my good friend, Jane, took the long drive across town to see Dr. Brandt for her pregnancy exam, she was told she would have to reschedule her appointment. Dr. Brandt had gone to the hospital to deliver twins (my twins), Jane asked, to deliver the Baatenburg twins? Yes, was the reply. So home she went. With no exam.
Every year on our girls´ birthday, we bring up how Dr, Brandt showed such favoritism () when he brushed Jane aside to delivery some other baby(s).
He was the very best kind of doctor who clearly loved what he did. I feel honored to have known him.

One of my favorites!!! Carl delivered two of my three kids. After the first one, we went to his locker, laughed at ourselves and never lost touch. I did his tax work for years and again, when he came in, we would laugh and laugh. He took great care of, and paid great tribute to, his wife Jean. What a guy. He'll be missed. I hope he went peacefully and without pain. There's a special place in heaven waiting for Carl Brandt.

Because of my insurance, I had to change to a new Doctor in my 9th month of pregnancy. I was very scared to do that but when I met Dr Brandt all of my fears were gone. I instantly felt at ease as I saw that he cared about me. I was blessed to have known him and to have him deliver my baby. So thankful for his life and legacy. My deepest sympathy to his family.

As a physician, Dr. Brandt listened when other doctors did not, cared (with humor) when other doctors did not, and took action when others did not. He gave me my life back. I will never forget him. Sincere condolences to his family.
