Sending prayers and fondly remembering Carl (Doug) in my typing class. His desk was right beside mine. He was such a nice guy who was a sweet friend of mine. RIP Carl (Doug)

I will remember Doug for his propensity to contemplate and discuss important issues, whether political, philosophical or theological. He devoted great energy to thinking thoroughly about such issues, and it was important for him to share the product of this slice of his mental economy, especially toward the end of improving the world one opinion at a time.

I will remember him for his ability to discuss music with me on a deep level - he could take apart a string quartet or a country song and break it down to what made it tick and what harmonies were important to its construction. I will remember him for his facility in discussing the work of D A Carson or Jared Diamond or Leo Tolstoy with an almost seamless parity of insightfulness.

I will ever remember him for his love of laughter. During my time with Doug at MUSC he could always find something funny in just about anything - he recognized this trait in others theologically: as an absolute good. I´m not sure he saw it in himself, but we his colleagues and friends saw it and have the pleasure of pointing it out. He always found a way to laugh and to make others laugh, diffusing some of the most tremendous pressure I´ve ever endured at a work situation, and his brand of humor has developed a life of its own, spreading like an anti-virus through many of the Charleston medical institutions as we - his former colleagues have spread our wings and quoted him at length.

Most importantly, Lynda and I will remember Doug for his warmth, always asking how you were, always showing concern for people who were important to you - even if they were not personally known to him. He was a lover of people, and those of us who got to know him have truly experienced the brand of love CS Lewis described as Philia. Our condolences on your loss not only of Doug´s fine mind but more importantly his beautiful life.

Prayers for the family. Doug was such a nice guy. He will always be remembered from Winnsboro. I always thought a lot of Doug. The Douglass family were well known and I was proud to call them my sweet friends. Gone but not forgotten.
