Carl Fink Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 26, 2023.
CARL JAMES FINK passed from this life on June 15, 2023, with his family by his side. He was 93 years old. Youngest of five, he was born to L.B. (Bradley) and Mary Delilah (Lila) Fink, née Yow, in Faith, NC. Carl was known for his indomitable sense of humor and quick-witted comebacks that endeared him to everyone he knew.

A man of integrity, leadership, and service, Carl was awarded Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts of America. Editor of the Yearbook, Junior Year, and Vice-President of his Senior Class at Catawba College, Carl graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After a graduate semester at Seminary, Carl went to Officer Candidate School in the U.S. Navy. Commissioned as Navy Ensign, he led the Gunnery, Second Division aboard the heavy cruiser USS Pittsburg. The ship called at international ports worldwide for almost four years and was engaged in the Korean conflict.

His 32-year career with IBM included sales in the Service Bureau, Typewriter Division, and Product Planning. During his 100% Club years, he was among the top 100 salespersons nationally.

In 1957, he met the love of his life, Mary Daly. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married and set up housekeeping in Charlotte, NC. Three children, Karen, Allison and Stuart, came along shortly. In 1969 the family moved to Austin, TX, where Carl's new assignment with IBM in Product Planning began, and they settled into making Austin home. All the family enjoyed living in Austin. When the children left for Baylor University, Carl and Mary moved to Georgetown and, most recently, to CC Young Senior Living in Dallas, TX. They traveled widely during their retirement years, always interested in what was new and exciting in the world.

Carl enjoyed serving as an usher and deacon in various churches. Always faithful, he brightened the days for many with his light-hearted comments and jokes. He never sought the limelight, but wherever he went, his watchword was, "Don't worry, be happy!"

His wife of 66 years, Mary; Karen and Manuel Santaella; Allison and Jim Summersett, Stuart and Vicki Fink, along with ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, survive him. Fondly known to his grands and great-grands as Poppy, his goal in life was to leave the legacy of a close-knit family that would continue to impact the world positively for generations to come, to which end he was grandly successful.

Private Burial at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery July 13, 2023.

Carl was such a kind and gentle soul, his wisdom and humor always made for a captive audience. I was so blessed to have known him, every visit he would lite up and say "BILLY", I always felt so welcome in his home. He will be deeply missed but his spirit will live on in all that knew him.

Carl was my brother in Christ. Everyone knows about his wit and humor, but Carl was also a great listener. My fondest memories of Carl are the times we spent over a cup of coffee. I referred to these as getting a "Carl fix". Carl was my mentor for guidance at times or just the Lord's vessel for brightening my day. Carl was a great blessing to me and is greatly missed.

Where to start--Carl Fink is the definition of sacrificial love which he poured over all of us. His great concern was to provide well financially, emotionally, spiritually for each of us. There was never a question about his veracity, his committment, his vision for our gang. He spent his energy working out his plan. My heart is both happy and sad as I think about the life ahead. I KNOW he is home and joyful beyond imagining being with Jesus and that makes me so very grateful and glad for him and the sadness of daily missing him is quickly dispelled when I remember that one day we will be together and until then I'll be about the business of making him happy as he watches me living out the time here, doing what I can to bring light and joy to those I meet. It's been a great ride, sweetheart!

There were too many memories with Poppy for me to count. I think the thing I'll remember most about him though is his joyful and kind heart. Those are two fruits of the spirit that I saw every time I looked at him. I am thankful he lived so long so that my children could know what a great man they came from. They miss him. I miss him. We all miss him. Love you Poppy. See you again someday.

"James A." I can still hear you say when I walk in the front door. Typically followed up by "Tell me the good news!" You always wanted the good news first. So here is the good news, you are in Heaven now, praising the Lord for all eternity. But I miss your voice and laughter.

Thank you for the legacy you left this family with. It has been an honor to be your son-in-law these last 42 years. Love you, Poppy!

Daddy, I loved you and you loved me. Thank you for loving me so much that you gave me away to Jim. What a great example of marriage, fathering and being fathered. Your notes of encouragement as I found my way and had a family of my own; your pride in me and our family. I am forever grateful and have no regrets. Thank you for the opportunity to care for you in these last few years...my privilege.

Love you always,
