Longtime area resident Carl F. Pelini, of East Liverpool, passed away Tuesday, May 12. Born in Youngstown, OH on October 13, 1929, he was the son of the late Xaviero and Nancy Orsini Pelini. Following his 1948 graduation from Ursuline High School, Carl received his degree from St. Vincent College in 1952, and later earned a Masters in Education from Kent State University. He continued doctoral studies at Northwestern University. Carl served with the U.S. Army in Puerto Rico from 1952 through 1954 before coming to East Liverpool, where he began his career teaching English. He later became assistant principal at Westgate School and then High School principal, before being named Assistant Superintendent of East Liverpool City Schools. He also served proudly as the assistant coach of the 1955 undefeated/untied Potters football team. In all of his interactions with others throughout his life, Carl was always respectful of everyone, which commanded the respect of others in return. In 1969 Carl left the field of education for business, ultimately becoming vice-president and partner of Energy Development Corporation, an oil and gas exploration firm. Carl played football at St. Vincent College and was a member of the victorious 1950 Tangerine Bowl team. He had also been inducted into the Ursuline High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a longtime member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, a member of the Riverview Cemetery Board, and a member of the board of the St. Clair Land Company. Carl was on the Board of the Columbiana County Port Authority from its inception until retiring as vice-chairman in 2007. He was a former President of the East Liverpool Country Club and was an avid golfer. He served on the advisory boards of National City Bank and the East Liverpool branch of Kent State University, where he was also honored on the Wall of Fame for his lifetime efforts on behalf of the University. Carl is survived at home by his wife, the former Philomena Cirucci, whom he married on November 25, 1954. Also surviving is one daughter, Susan McGalla and her husband, Stephen, of Mt. Lebanon, PA, and two sons, Dr. David Pelini and his wife, Susan, of Piney Point Village, TX, and Atty. Craig Pelini and his wife, Pam, of North Canton, OH. Five grandchildren survive as well: Charles Pelini, Nicholas Pelini, Kate Pelini, Corrin Pelini and Christine Pelini. There are also two sisters, Irma Pelini of Youngstown and Mary French of Boardman. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Pelini and Millie Orlando, along with a brother, Anthony Pelini. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Carl's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 18th, at St. Aloysius Church, with Father Joseph Fata of St. Luke Catholic Church. A private family burial is to take place on Tuesday at Saint Vincent Cemetery on the grounds of St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.
