Carl Rasimas Obituary

Visit the Legacy Remembers website to view the full obituary.
Carl always said that he had two great loves of his life: his Pershing High School sweetheart and wife of 59 years, Janet (Saur) with whom he built a home, raised a family (Jeffrey and Amy), and traveled the world; and later, his girlfriend Sharon (Kopitzke) with whom he shared his golden years, golfing and surrounded by her loving family.
But Carl had many loves in his life: his grandchildren (Peter, Andrew, Alex and Lucy); his ragtag group of golfing buddies; his professional work (Orthopedic Surgeon); his neighborhood (whose kids he always patched up and sent on their way); his seemingly endless appetite for sweets in the morning; his boundless sense of humor and grace which he bestowed upon his numerous friends and colleagues; and the many hounds he spoiled throughout his life, including his trusted golfing companion, Laser.
Carl was predeceased by his parents (Samuel and Regina), his wife (Janet), his brother (Robert) and his son (Jeffrey). There will be no funeral or memorial services per Carl's wishes.

My parents, Norman and Eileen Smith, became great friends and travel companions of Carl and Janet when they met at the Nomads club. Dad and mom kept photo albums of the trips and Carl and Janet appeared in many of those albums. Even when the international trips ended, the friendship remained strong, and Carl and Janet were so very supportive when mom passed in 2006. (Dad passed in 2020.) My heartfelt condolences are with the family at this time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Our fond memories of Carl go back to our college days. He and Janet stood up for us when Jack and I married in 1961. Although we have been separated by many miles since then, he and Janet always kept in touch with us. I never met a more thoughtful couple. You could always count on Carl for any kind of help in any circumstance. Our memories will help us reflex on what a great person he truly was

It is a rare gift when two couples are each other's best friends. Carl and Janet were an intricate part of our lives for nearly half a century. We traveled the world together, first through two University Liggett School trips, and then through the Nomads tour group. Carl's humanitarian character and compassion became quickly apparent on our first trip together to Egypt. He assisted the elderly or less physically able in the group, often putting his own needs and desires last. This prevailed throughout his life. Carl's affability, optimism, and infectious laugh made him a friend to everyone. His quick wit and keen intellect made him an interesting, yet humble, conversationalist. He was dedicated to his profession as an orthopedic surgeon, but also equally loyal and dedicated to his family and friends. He could spend hours engaged in playing gin rummy on long train and bus rides while traveling throughout the world. He was an avid golfer, often joined by his l!
oyal sidekick, Laser. Losing Carl, just a few years after Janet, creates a void in our lives that will never be filled. However, we consider ourselves privileged and blessed to have journeyed through so much of our lives together, enjoying each others' company, in such a unique and priceless friendship. We extend our deepest sympathies to Carl's beloved family: Amy, Peter, Andrew, Alex, Lucy, and Sharon, with whom Carl found love a second time around. You remain close in our thoughts and prayers.

Safe trip my dear friend since 1961. What fun we had in Med School and later in practice together. Yearly golf trips to Innisbrook, lousy golf but laughs to last a lifetime. I miss your cheerful, positive outlook. cdynt

I will never forget all the wonderful times I spent with Carl and Janet and the love and care they showered on me when I most needed it. I take comfort in knowing Carl and Janet are back together and with Jeff. Heartfelt sympathy to Amy, Peter, Andrew, Alex, and Lucy. You were loved.

I first met Dr. Rasimas in 1976 at Bon Secours. He always brightened my day. To his family and to Sharon, my thoughts are with you.

Carl and Janet have been friends since college. We shared many fun times with other member of Club progressive dinners at Christmas, Steak Roasts in the summer, a trip to Grand Rapids spending the weekend with another Club couple, etc. I last saw Carl and Sharon at the Club Christmas luncheon. He was his usual exuberant happy self. I'm so glad that that will be my final memory of him laughing and enjoying life. I will miss, him.LetW

Dr Rasimas called me his "second daughter" when I was growing up on Heather Lane in Grosse Pointe, MI. In the 1970s, his daughter Amy and I played together almost every day, it seemed, even though we went to different elementary schools. During the 12+ plus years that we grew up on the same street, I knew I was welcome at Dr Carl Rasimas' house. I loved being with the whole family in the evenings. They drank Pepsi and ate popcorn and watched TV!! Amy, Jeffrey, and I would be hanging out on the family room floor. Mrs Janet Rasimas would be stitching needlepoint on one couch while Dr Rasimas would be speaking into his microphone sitting on the other. He was dictating notes or speaking important patient care instructions. I certainly didn't know exactly, but I was very impressed. He always sounded serious and terribly official in the midst of our playing, Pepsi, popcorn, and TV watching.
When I dislocated the growth plate in my left elbow at age 9 during a neighborhood game of Around the House, Dr Rasimas took care of me. My parents walked with me down to his house the next day with my swollen arm. My "Second Dad" performed the surgery at our local hospital and did not charge my family a penny. I felt loved and cared for.
I treasure my life-long friendship with Amy. I treasure the happy childhood memories of being Dr Rasimas' second daughter.
Some years back, I received a letter from Carl. He told me how sad he was to lose Janet and how happy he was to have found new love with Sharon. I was so very happy for him.
I am grateful for the fatherly care he showed me as a friend of Amy's. He treated me like one of his own. I honor him and remember him with a full heart. His generosity, good humor, and faithful support in my early years were substantial and formative. With my love, Roberta Kisker
