My sincere condolences to the Robie family - just came across the obituary by accident. My name is Jon Walheim. I was a freestyler and swam for LaSalle High School and LaSalle College in Philly. I also swam summers in college for Vesper. One of my best swimming accomplishments was swimming the freestyle leg of the medley relay with Carl. We won the AAU Easterns and went to the nationals in1966 - only managed a 6th place finish in the finals. But, as others have said, my most exciting moment in swimming was not Mark Spitz or Michael Phelps but standing on my chair cheering and watching Carl in that outside lane winning the most deserved Olympic gold medal of all time.
Our paths never crossed again after that relay as I went on to med school while Carl was in law school, but I will always remember Carl.

The Kraus family; Agnes(mom)who worked the table w/Mrs.Frances Robie, brothers Fred (freestyle) and David(f

lyer) trained with Carl at Kelly Pool and the Aquarium Pool. We are all together for Christmas & I told them of Carls' passing We all had some memories with Carl & his mom and dad and sister Denise at Kelly Pool. We practiced w/ the girls at the recreation pool during the summer. He was the only male at Vesper that I know of to go to the Olympics and win twice. I watched him on Wide World of Sports at the New London Submarine Base 1964.
I told the sailors watching I swam with him, and they didn't believe me.
Carl, Peter Grace, Skip(George) Thornber and I won Gold @ the National AAU Age Group Meet 1961. After going off the tower we headed out for some food. Kelly bought at Lintens City Line ave. He regreted buying us food. He said we ate more than the rowers. It was the best time of my life. I never gave up competition. I have my own real estate business Conrad J Kraus Real Estate Inc.40 years with my wife and Jennie Grace Homes Inc. owned by my wife Jennie. You may remember us Chris. We had lunch with u and Carl at Marina Jacks restaurant on a short notice New Years eve day '96. He had just moved in to the new brick office on Fruitville Rd. Carl represented the leader of our Vesper Swim team. I'm sure he was a leader in Sarasota business community and his YMCA & golf club.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Carl. I swam and carpooled with Denise and have many wonderful memories of Carl driving us to practice through the streets of Fairmount Park in his vet, waving to everyone we saw on the street! He always joked with us and gave us words of encouragement before meets. My deepest sympathy to the entire Robie family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Carl was a good friend at meets during the early years, 1957 - 1962. He was always friendly and everyone loved watching him swim fly. My favorite Olympic moment is screaming at my TV when he won in 1968. I swam 200 fly during my workout this morning in his honor. I'll always remember him fondly, and I send my sincerest sympathy to all his family and friends.

The Robie Family: very saddened to hear of Carl's passing. I swam with Carl at the Vesper Boat Club during the early to late 1960's at Kelly Pool in Fairmount Park along with George Breen and others. Carl was a wonderful role model and friend to all. His comeback at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics was one of the greatest in swimming history. I will keep the memories of Carl, Kelly Pool, and Fairmount Park close to me forever.

Dear Chrisy: Oh, How I cried, when I saw Carl's name that was listed in the newspaper!
He helped me so much when my son died and I had to lean on Carl during the settlement of my son's estate.

You are in my prayers, as you go on in life without your wonderful husband. However, your children will be near to you during this time, and my thoughts will be close to you, at this painful time.

I will miss his steady voice, whenever I had a problem that he was able to solve without much trouble, and he always had a smile in his voice whenever he was able to help me in all of my troubles. (I have written 2 books, and he is in them!)
Fondly, Dotty Caless

I swam with Carl the summer of 1968 at Foxcatcher and I have very fond memories of him. I was only 13 years old but was competing in the Olympic Trials for the first time and Carl was very encouraging to me. He was so confident that he was going back to get the gold and I will never forget watching him do it from my living room in Havertown, PA. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I will always think of him fondly.
