Carl Short Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 24, 2005.
Carl F. Short
Mr. Short, 84, of Charlotte, departed this life for his eternal one on Saturday, January 22, 2005, after a brief illness at Presbyterian Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 25, at Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church, with a service to celebrate his life to follow at 11 a.m. The Reverend Dr. Mary John Dye will officiate. Entombment is private.
Born October 19, 1920, in Mecklenburg County, to the late A. A. and Mary A. Short, he graduated from Tech High and provided food service for Highland Park and Johnston Mills. Later Carl opened the 19th Hole Grill, where he met and made many lasting friendships. He had such a love of people and any animal who came his way became his.
Carl was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Christine, on December 18, 2004. He and Christine were longtime members of Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church and the Walter J. Miller Sunday School Class and leave behind many wonderful friends and memories.
In addition to Christine, Carl was also preceded in death by an older brother, Winfred, and his sister, Fay Short.
He is lovingly survived by his son, Freddie Short and his wife, Marcia, of Richmond, VA; his daughter, Jean Horne and her husband, David, of Mint Hill; his sister Estelle Brooks; and his special friend, David Mullaney.
Though the twinkle in his eye is gone, the memory of Carl's beautiful nature is forever in our hearts. We will miss you Pop and Mama.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church, 501 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC 28204.
Mr. Short's family is being served by the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, on-line at www.hankinsandwhittingtonwilsonchapel.com.

A couple of decades back, I had the privilege of working next door to the 19th Hole Grill and still remember the good food and nice, down-home atmosphere. I fondly remember Mr. Short behind the counter and the funny golf pictures on the wall. The grill was a little slice of Americana in an "original" part of Charlotte, which we retain much too little of today. So thanks for the memories, and for leaving a nostalgic mark on this man's mind.

I also enjoyed working with Jean for a short time back then, and extend my sincere condolences on the loss of your dad.
