Carl Van Hove Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2024.
Carl Van Hove, born Nov. 8, 1939 in Mohall ND, passed away Mar. 15 2024 at his Fort Lupton home.

Carl worked on the family farm and then for Johnny Forness before enlisting in the Marines at 17. After serving in the Marines he came back to Mohall and met Gail Arneson. They eloped and got married in Morristown, SD on October 31, 1961.

Shortly after getting married they moved south of Rhame to work for Donald Lowe as a ranch and farm hand. Their children Naomi, Teresa, and Ed were born on the ranch and blessed with ranch life in their early years. Carl enjoyed ranch work: starting horses, working cattle, and roping and his mechanical aptitude was very useful maintaining the trucks and tractors for farming. He and Gail roped as a team for several years at a roping series held at the Stearns Ranch.

From1976 to 1977 he worked for Bill Almy. In 1977 the family moved to Scranton ND and Carl started trucking. He worked for multiple trucking companies, moving to Fort Lupton CO in the mid 80s and retiring from Navajo at age 69 to help Gail as she battled some health issues.

Carl was an avid gun collector and reloader and enjoyed hunting elk and deer in a no motorized vehicle DOW area in Colorado, riding to the hunting spots and packing out deer and elk for anyone. He went with Teresa to some endurance rides to trail ride or do the fun ride events and he rode the Mah Dah Hey trail twice with Naomi and Teresa. He loved to go to cowboy style and sporting clay shooting events at his gun club and did some minor gun-smithing, working on his own guns as well as fixing things for friends and neighbors and helping the club with introductory shooting classes.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary (John) Forness and Julieanna Van Hove, brother Harry Van Hove, wife Gail, niece Jenice Schall, and nephew in law Todd Magnuson.

Survived by Naomi Van Hove(special friend Brian Smyle), Teresa Van Hove and Edmund(Margaret) Van Hove and step grandson Steven(Sara) Gray and nieces Linda(Vern) Emerson, Verla (Jim)Rostad, and Marlys Magnuson and many grand nieces and nephews.

Carl donated his body to Science Care as did Gail. There will be a memorial service on September 21 at his home at 16603 county road 6, Fort Lupton,CO and a service in October in Rhame, ND.
