Carliss Blossom McGarrity Tindall was born July 31, 1921, to Carl Hobson and Mabel Mills McGarrity, in Osceola, AR. Her grandfather co-owned the Osceolla cotton gin, and followinghis death, the family moved to Charleston, SC, where her father was the overnight telegraph operator for Western Union.
She graduated from Memminger High School and earned a Bachelor's degree in English from Furman University in 1942, where she met George Brown Tindall. They married in 19464, an dboth earned Masters' degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill. After a few academic appointments elsewhere, they settled in Chapel Hill from 1958 on and lived in the Hidden Hills neighborhood, later retiring to the Carol Woods Retirement Community. Survivors include her daughter, Blair Tindall of Marina del Rey, California; her son, Bruce Tindall (Sarah Schneewind) of San Diego, California and her grandson, Leo Tindall. Mrs. Tindall was preceeded in death by her husband in 2006.
Memorial services will be at Carol Woods Retirement Community on Monday, April 2, 2018 at 3:00PM. Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill has been entrusted to care for the Tindall family.
