Charles Salgado, also known as Carlos, Chris, Chuck and Sal, son of the late Apolonio Salgado and Cornelia Murrieta Salgado was Born March 11, 1934 in Encinitas, California and passed away on October 19, 2016 in Reedley, California at age 82. Charlie grew up in Encinitas on the Paul Ecke Ranch, in Cardiff with his Aunt Trini Corrales and her family and later he moved to Selma CA, where he resided until he joined the United States Navy. Charlie entered the Navy on June 5, 1951 in San Francisco, CA and faithfully served the United States of America for three and half years during the Korean War. His duty was as a part of Squadron 7 on the USS Taussig, a Sumner-class destroyer. He received the Korean Service Medal (4 stars), the United Nations Service Medal, the National Service Medal and the China Service Medal. He was Honorably Discharged on March 7, 1955 in San Diego, California. On July 13 1955, he entered the United States Marine Corps as a Private First Class and rose to the rank of Corporal. After 4 weeks training in Hawaii, he returned to California where he was an Infantry Unit Leader, stationed at Camp Matthews and also Marine Corp Recruit Depot, San Diego. His Marine buddies, called him, “Sal”. Charlie was awarded two Good Conduct Medals during his four-year commitment and was Honorably Discharged on July 12, 1959. Charlie was a long-standing member of the Retail Clerks Union Local 135 where he gained the names Chuck and Chris. After he retired, he worked as a security guard near his home in Reedley.
Charles Salgado was preceded in death by his younger brother, Richard Salgado and is survived by his two brothers and their wives, Apolonio (Polie) and Catalina (Liza) Salgado and Robert (Bobby) and Catherine (Cathy) Orozco; nephews, Paul Salgado and Steven Salgado, their wives and children; John Orozco and Scott Orozco and their wives; Sister in law, Martha Salgado, nieces, April Salgado Beltran, her children and grandchildren and Dawn Salgado Cabrera, her husband, children and grandchildren; many cousins and their families. Charlie remained close to step daughter, Christy English Bensch and her children, Stephanie Donavan Ito, Shelley Donavan Murray, their husbands and with Stephanie’s children, as well as Joe and Alice Gonzales and their family of Selma, California. In Lieu of flower, the family has requested donations be made to the Encinitas American Legion 210 W. F Street, Encinitas, CA 92024. Services will be held on November 10, 2016 10am Viewing, 10:30 am Rosary, followed by Mass at 11:00 Saint James Church 625 Nardo St. Solana Beach, California 92075 followed by the burial at El Camino Cemetery, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd. San Diego, CA 92121.
