I was privileged to meet Carmen, Chris, and pretty Danielle last June and became her physical therapist. Never a dull moment with her, and she inspired me to continue to help others, especially in cases like her. God bless you Carmen. Rest in peace. Missing you.

Through the years of caring for her in the Intensive Care Unit at Shriner's Hospital, she always made me feel loved no matter what we needed her to do to get better. She was a remarkable person. She is part of my life always. Just say "Carmen" and we all know who we are speaking about.

Carmen introduced me to taking care of her at Shriner's when I started there 30 years ago. It was always so nice to catch up with her in clinic. I will always remember her story about when Michael Jordan was teasing her about how clean her gym shoes were, and she teased him back and told him they were so clean cause she didn't walk! She always knew how to kid around and laugh with us.

When I first encountered Carmen and Christopher, I was a manager at Target. I stopped them as they were passing by and said to them "What a beautiful baby girl." We then talked for hours. They would visit Target often and we would just talk and talk. She always left an impression on me of compassion and faith. I have never met anyone as strong and sincere as her. May God bless her soul!

For several years, I would visit Carmen, Chris and Danielle once week or so. I would sit and chat with Carmen and usually accidentally drop food on her while I tried to feed her. She never complained about that. She just wanted some girl talk time. She had a wisdom and a spunky spirit that couldn't be quenched.

She loved Jesus, Chris and Danielle, her family and the Bulls. She was basically a local celebrity when she wheeled into the United Center. I felt like I was part of her entourage that day. People were happy to see Carmen. In the gentlest way, she made people see past a mechanical chair to truly recognize the woman sitting in it. She didn't shy away from them or hide.

She was so happy to show off her family and be out with them. She would just beam as she talked about Danielle and how smart she was. I remember Carmen working with Danielle on the computer to learn her letters when Danielle was just tiny. She was always a little awed that she was able to produce such an wonderful child.

She taught me that strength is not from what you can do, but from how you live with what you've been given, how you choose to love God and love your family each and every day in the way that you are able. She gave me perspective and hope. I will forever be grateful for our friendship. She has made me better.

My family and I were so sad to hear about the loss of Carmen. For years at the United Center you could always count on seeing her in the hallway outside the locker room and she would always have a smile for you along with words of encouragement. She was just a very special person and we will miss her greatly. Our thoughts and prayers to Chris and Danielle. Rest In Peace Carmen!

I remember the last time I spoke with Carmen, Jose and I had dinner with all of you. I was impressed with Danielle's test scores, and let you know that. I also remember visiting you when you were pregnant with Danielle and how we prayed over you. Also, it was awesome to witness your baptism at New Life Lakeview, an inspiration to everyone. You will be missed Carmen, we love you.

Carmen you will be forever in my heart, I miss the times in grammar school and high school that I made you laugh, and you would just tell me to stop it because we laugh until tears fall from our eyes. Well my tears are now for you that I am going to miss you. "Rest In Heaven friend." My prayers to the family and God Bless.

I am devastated about the loss of my friend, Carmen. From the first moment I met her almost 30 years ago, I knew she was a special person and we bonded right away. When I think of Carmen, I think of a life well lived. An outgoing yet sometimes shy woman who was aware of the hand that she was dealt, but that didn't deter her. She attacked life head on. Her beauty came through her very being, and she will be missed.

Carmen is a friend of mine. We started as teacher and student, but those roles blurred very quickly. We often found ourselves talking about computers, family, friends, fears, surgeries, basketball, wheelchairs and burritos. I was introduced to her parents and sisters. She met my wife and children. We didn't get to see each other often but, with each visit we simple picked up our conversation. I knew of Chris long before we met. Her smile always told when good things were happening. Her face never was big enough for the smile called Danielle. Her love for others was never hidden. Carmen had a magic about her. Her spirit and joy of living could be seen and felt by everyone she met. She carried a lot of baggage with her, but given five minutes all you could see was the wonderful woman sitting in front of you. She accomplished whatever she set her mind to do. She is not gone, her spirit and joy lives in all our hearts. To me she will always embody the positive, unselfish, true nature of life and love. Bob & Bette Bleeker

I was Carmen's first game teacher at Jane A. Neil. I loved her so much, especially her desire and will to do her classroom work by herself, art projects and much more. Her spirit was always happy and beautiful. I remember when she invited me to her first Holy Communion. I was so honored to be there. She contacted me on Facebook about two years ago and I was so happy that she was married and had a beautiful daughter. She is now with God and and I am sure that she is one of his special angels. Love you Carmen.

Christopher and Danielle,

When I was asked to write a book about Dreams for Kids, the organization I founded, I knew immediately I would devote a chapter to Carmen. The moment I met Carmen at ICRE I was filled with the radiance of her spirit, the warmth of her smile, and the blessings of her grace. Carmen was Dreams for Kids. And she always will be. Carmen's love and legacy lives on, in both of you, and in all of us. Godspeed to my beautiful friend.

Carmen I met you years ago at I.C.R.E, you volunteered and helped all the residents upgrade their computer skills. When I escorted some students to the Bulls Game you were working there. You took us down in the tunnel where all the players come in . Every player knew you , several came and gave you a kiss. We were able to also meet the LuvABulls. You were a very inspirational person, never complained. You loved Chris and Danielle. So proud of her.You will now guide her, she has the best guardian angel. Rest in Peace, your pain is over.

Carmen. Thank you. You were such a great asset to the TAAD Center and truly an inspiration not only to those children with disabilities who you helped but to all of us who worked at TAAD.

You opened our eyes to many abilities we all have. You opened our minds to respect those who are different. You opened our hearts to love and care for those who needed assistance. My life was forever changed.

I will always cherish the memories of our times together.
