Barbara Boland Obituary
She was born Feb. 20, 1918, in Jamaica Plain, Mass., the daughter of Joseph E. and Helen (Balfour) Gavin. She moved to Newmarket in 1958.
She was a graduate of Winthrop (Mass.) High School.
Mrs. Boland worked for Dickie-Raymond of Boston, the Boston New Bureau/Barrons, and for 14 years in the Boston bureau of The Associated Press.
The widow of John J. Boland, who died in 2006, she is survived by one son and his wife, J. Gregory and Cheryl Boland of Newmarket; two grandchildren, Robert Weston and Dagney Weston; one sister-in-law and her husband, Barbara and William Doren of Natick, Mass.; and, several cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by one brother, Robert F. Gavin of Cape Cod.
WE REMEMBER: She married John J. Boland of East Boston in 1952. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Newfields and served as their representative on St. Mary's Parish Council.
She was a member of the Newmarket Extension Group and served nine years on the Rockingham County Extension Home Economics Advisory Council. She served one term on the N.H. Extension Council as the Rockingham County representative. She was an RSVP volunteer and served on the RSVP Council for six years.
She was a charter member of the Newmarket Historical Society, a member of the Rockingham Craftsmen and the Lee Bowling League. She was an active member of the Newmarket Senior Citizens and served six years on the board of directors. In the 1960s she was co-director of the Red Cross Water Safety Program and worked on many blood mobiles.
An early member of the Active Retirement Association in Durham, she served on nominating committees and was a 10-year member of the Tour Committee.
SERVICES: Private services will be celebrated in the spring.

Barbara was one of the funniest, sweetest ladies I have ever met. I loved spending time with her. She will be missed but she is in such a happier place, now with John. My prayers and thoughts are with you guys.
