I first met Carol in 1977 when I was a summer student at the National Research Council in Ottawa. When I returned in 1979 as a full-time employee, he soon introduced be to the young lady that would later be my wife. Liz had been one of Carol & Pauline's neighbours in Vars and had often babysat Louise, Marc & Normand.
We worked together for 17 years at NRC, building instruments for radio telescopes located in Algonquin Park and Hawaii, before he retired and I moved my family to Arizona (and later to New Mexico). As well as being a great work colleague, Carol was a good friend, even though I had once pushed him into his pool and he broke a rib. (How was I to know he couldn't swim!!!) It was hard not to enjoy his endless stories and (mostly) amusing jokes.
The Hayward family was always invited to the Bergeron Christmas Eve dinners and he & Pauline always attended our Grey Cup parties. No NRC ski trip to Otter Lake or Le Petite Rouge in January would be complete without Carol to entertain us (along with his brother, Guy "Pencil" Bergeron).
Carol's work on the Solar Patrol, the ARO K-Band Maser and the pair of 345 GHz receivers built for the JCMT were a few of the highlights of his long professional career at NRC. He was our group's expert on cryogenics and high-vacuum systems. Ever the perfectionist, he always did things right, no matter how long it might take. For example, it took him over a decade to renovate his basement (but it did include a new wet bar).
I know the last few years have been hard on Carol, as well as his family.
Rest in Peace, Old Friend / Mon'Amie
