Carol Moriarty Obituary

Published by The New Haven Register from Apr. 15 to Apr. 23, 2017.
Carol O'Day Moriarty, 78, beloved wife of Thomas Moriarty, passed away on April 11, 2017. She was born December 28, 1938 in Jamaica Plain, MA to the late Joseph and Anne Baxter. Carol is predeceased by her late husband of 43 wonderful years, Frank O'Day of Madison, CT and her sons Matthew and Frankie O'Day, as well as her brother Philip Baxter. Carol spoke fondly of her childhood in Jamaica Plain. She was born into a big family and had great adventures with her neighborhood friends. Carol forged friendships that lasted a lifetime. She attended Boston College, leaving to marry and to raise seven children. While raising her children, Carol returned to college, and earned her degree in Psychology from Southern Connecticut State University. She loved children and worked at the Children's Psychiatric Center at Yale for over a decade. An active outdoorswoman, Carol enjoyed her weekly hiking, cycling, and kayaking with the New Haven Hiking Club. She traveled extensively and loved meeting new people and experiencing new adventures. Carol was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, playing bridge and scrabble. She was a parishioner of Christ the King in Old Lyme, and formerly attended St. George Church in Guilford, and St. Margaret Church in Madison. Service to her community was important to her and she devoted many years to various organizations. Carol volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Shoreline Food Pantry, the library at Truman School in New Haven, and the Historical Society of New Haven. While her children were growing up, she was actively involved in the PTA, the Girl Scouts, the Nuclear Arms Freeze Group, and the Irish Club of New Haven. Carol was an inspiration to many. She was a very loving, loyal and devoted wife, mother, grammy, aunt, sister and friend. Carol will be most remembered for her generosity, zest for life, sense of humor, and her internal strength and fortitude. Carol will always remain a role model for her children and grandchildren. She is survived by daughters Anne Greene and her husband Brendan of Norwell, MA, Kathleen O'Day of San Francisco, CA, Tara Logan and her husband John of Exton, PA, and Maureen O'Day and her husband Ernest Aarsen of Madison, CT and by her son Patrick O'Day of Deep River, CT. Her adoring 12 grandchildren include Caitlin, Jackie, Conor, and Justin Greene, Cecilia, Kathy, Annie, and Marie Logan, Kyle, June, and Jolie Aarsen, and Adam Moriarty. She is survived by her stepchildren Julie Moriarty of Farmington, CT, Colin Moriarty (Carmen) of Manhattan, NY, and Joan Moriarty of Old Lyme, CT. Throughout her life she was very close to her 7 siblings and is survived by six siblings, Dorothy Pitts (Albert) of Holbrook, MA, Patricia Tanner (John) of Melbourne, Australia, Frances Galvin (Frank) of West Roxbury, MA, Joseph Baxter (Sylvia) of Dennis, MA, Jeanne Lavine (Dan) of Sudbury, MA, and John Baxter (Brenda) of Denton, NC. A special thank you to the compassionate Clinton EMTs, Police officers and the neighbors who came to her aid. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday April 18th at 10am at St George Church located at 33 Whitfield Street, Guilford CT. Visitation will be held on Monday April 17th from 5-9pm at Swan Funeral Home at 825 Boston Post Rd, Madison, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carol's honor to the Estuary Council of Seniors, Meals on Wheels, 220 Main Street, Old Saybrook, CT 06475 (Attention Stanley).

Aunt Carol and Uncle Frank always thought of others before themselves. Back in the day when my friend and I unexpectedly showed up at their house, they fed us, cleaned us up , notified our parents and put us on the train back to Boston. When we got home we definitely paid for our mistake. It was a challenging era in the 60's and early 70's. Learn from this and pass it on to your children. Every action has a reaction. Cousin Dave

I discovered at this moment that Carol died in April. Our children and hers went to school together and enjoyed friendships throughout the years. What a wonderful family.
Our deepest sympathy to all. I don't know how we missed this sad news. She was so nice and such a great Mom.

I am a friend of Kathleen's and over the year have heard countless stories of her Mom Carol. I only had the opportunity to meet Carol once at a picnic in San Francisco, but it was memorable. I'll never forget her bright and energetic presence as she greeted me and we chatted briefly. Over the years of knowing Kathleen, I'd come to learn that my small interaction with her mom Carol was a good representation of how she lived her life. With spirit. I'm sorry she left us too soon.

Kathleen and Family: My heart breaks for your family on losing your Mother, especially so suddenly when she was so full of life. I have had the privilege of meeting Carol several times over the years when she would visit my friend and colleague Kathleen in San Francisco. She was truly a wonderful woman and the brightest light in any room. In my over fourteen years of knowing Kathleen, she only speaks of her Mother with such love and admiration of her strength and humor. She has a great legacy in her children and grandchildren that she without doubt has influenced greatly. I have never met a more giving, kind and compassionate person than Kathleen and I have often noted how Kathleen resembles her Mom. Its an admirable thing to raise kind and loving children in this world and that is a testament to this wonderful family. Take comfort in your loving family and memories of your Mother. It is a true blessing to have such a close and loving family as yours in times like these. Ani

I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to my childhood neighbors and friends, Anne, Patrick, Kathleen, Tara, and Maureen on the passing of your wonderful mom. Some of my fondest memories of growing up in Madison revolve around spending time with your family. Your mom always welcomed us from the moment we moved next door. She was never too busy to whip up a batch of snickerdoodles or cart a van load of kids to a drive-in movie. She was a very special person and I am glad that she was part of my childhood! My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. With Love and Prayers, Debbie (Yalmokas) Kelly

Dearest Tom and all of Carol's family....
Alan and I are shocked and saddened beyond belief to hear of Carol's tragic passing.

We had the opportunity to get to know both Carol and Tom during our oh-so-eventful bicycle trip through Belguim and France almost one year ago.....their Honeymoon!
Carol was fit, fun and could out-cycle most of us....some at least two decades younger!!

Carol was beautiful....on the inside and out and is now a beautiful angel
Know that you are in our prayers.

I can't think of my childhood in Madison without thinking of the O'Day family and smiling. I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of your mother, Carol. She was a kind, special person who welcomed our family the moment we moved next door. My sister, Debbie, and I always marveled at the way your mom managed all of you guys and friends, too. She never lost her cool in spite of the craziness. Your mom's fried dough was awesome! Glad that I knew her as a child and all of you. So sorry for your loss. Heaven has gained a beautiful angel. With love and peace, Laura Yalmokas Coughlin

My deepest condolences to Carol's family and friends. I had the honor of getting to know Carol as her manager for the M.O.W. progam. The impact she had on us is immeasurable. Her smile made us smile. Her laugh made us laugh. Her kindness made us all strive to be a little kinder. She will forever be in our hearts and prayers.

Cousins.... You know how I feel about your mom. Everyone should have an Auntie Carol in their life.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Amen.
