Carol Spilman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 15, 2018.
Carol Rae Spilman, television actress, died on Saturday, December 15, 2018, at approximately 9:30pm PST, in the Country Villa Rehabilitation Center, a hospice in Los Angeles. She was 62. Brent Butcher, a friend, was with her when she passed; and he reported that she died peacefully. I had spent several hours with Carol earlier in the afternoon, along with Loyd, a small terrier mix that we adopted. She was my good friend for more than twenty-five years, and it will be difficult for me to continue my life without her. I loved her very much, even though our relationship could be difficult at times. Carol will be cremated and returned to Clear Lake, Iowa, her home town, for burial in the family plot near her father, Loyd Spilman. Services in Clear Lake and in Los Angeles are pending. She is survived by her mother, Gladys Baker, of Clear Lake; a sister, Kathy Baker; a sister, Sheryl Johnson; a niece, Amanda Baker, of San Diego; a niece, Liz Bauer; a nephew, Dusty Johnson; and a niece, Alli Johnson, of Arizona. Carol was a television actress who had roles in ABC's "General Hospital," and various nighttime sitcoms throughout the 1970s and 1980s; such as "Three's Company;" "One Day at a Time;" "Boys Will Be Boys;" "Rescue 911;" and "The Golden Girls." Her IMDB page can be found at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2812291/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1. She also appeared as a contestant on more than a dozen game shows during her career. Carol was an animal lover, who had three dogs and a cat as pets during her lifetime. Her dogs–Andy and Buddy, and her cat, Rusty; were cremated as they died; and their remains will be interred with Carol's remains, as was her last wish during life. Her dog Loyd; named after her father, is still living, and will remain with Larry, Carol's longtime friend. I will be adding photos and videos to this memorial website, so check in from time to time for new content. Please feel free to add your own photos and memories to Carol's memorial, and if I have made any factual errors, please let me know of that, as well. Larry Luntsford

I first met Carol when she was at a drama camp at the University of Iowa between her junior and senior years of high school. I was crazy about her-her beauty, energy, and love for life and new experiences. I don't know if her Mom remembers dropping her off a few times in Newton-along drive-so we could hang out together. I continued to see Carol when we both attended University of Iowa but then she transferred to SC. When I later came out to school in LA, we saw each other a few times and had lunch together. After school, I took a job in Riverside and we lost touch. We reconnected a few years ago on Facebook- I think she was living in Newport at the time- and talked about getting together- but lost track again when my work required getting off facebook. I was shocked and saddened to learn of her death, but am happy she had many friends, some of whom were with her when she passed. I didn't learn of her death until only recently, and can only offer my sincere condolences to her friends and family. dave gunn

A beautiful and detailed heart and soul dedication to Carol from Larry, her loving partner and my only brother. I met Carol briefly 2 or 3 times over the years while visiting Larry and I did not know her well. I have learned about her life through this website and commend her for her accomplishments in Hollywood. Carol loved to tell interesting Hollywood stories. We shared a common love for animals and for Betty and Veronica. Carol, may you find that special place that connects Heaven and Earth to meet your furry friends and cross over the Rainbow Bridge'.

And for my heartbroken brother, I mourn your loss. The healing process is a long and difficult one and may you find peace and joy in the beautiful memories you shared and may they keep you strong and help you to move on. If you cry because the sun has gone out of your life, your tears will prevent you from seeing the stars. ~ Rabindranath Tagore ~ There are many stars in your life, Larry. You just have to be ready to see them.

Dear Carol, though I did not have the pleasure of meeting you, I did have the pleasure last evening of meeting your loving partner Larry and your beloved dog Lloyd and hear stories of the life you shared with them. So what I do know about you for sure, is that you were (and are) well and truly loved and now deeply missed. And I believe you still bless them with your beautiful Spirit

Dear Carol,

I am saddened to hear of your untimely death. I can only hope you did not suffer in body, mind, and spirit prior to your passing. Though you are in a better place now and certianly being lovingly nurtured, I regret your departure from our world. I fondly recall our many phone conversations these recent years; your beautiful spirit would shimmer and shine even as you spoke of difficult challenges in your life.

You inspired so many people with your ever-positive outlook and spontaneous follow-through to aid, to help in any way possible--certainly including myself. Your laughter was genuine and sparkled with an ongoing awareness of a higher perspective.

You will be missed by many. I miss you and thank you for your kindness, your belief in me, and your loving friendship. Adieu for now ... until I too slip from this world to yours.

My life is much better for having known Carol Spilman. I enjoyed Carol's company immensely. Carol was a beautiful person inside and out. She was very vibrant, personable and a fun person to be with. We tried new restaurants, saw many movies, plays, etc. I even enjoyed taking Carol and her great dog, Loyd, to the dog park. Carol you are constantly in my thoughts and prayers. Gog bless you and your family. Dave Mucha
